WASHINGTON M. VARS, OF'NORW'ICH, CONNECTICUT.
STOCKlNG-SUPPORTER.
. srncrrxcn'rron forming p'artof Letters'Patent No. 752,271, dated February 16, 1904.
Application filed October 22, 1903. Serial No.178,049. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, WASHINGTON M. VAns,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Norwich, county-of New London, and State-f Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stocking Supporters, which improvements are fully setforth and described in the following specifi- Qcation, reference being had to the accompanyingsheet of drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of asupporter embodying my said improvements, and Fig. 2 is v a perspective view of the same with the clamping parts separated. Fig. 3 is a cross-sec- .tionalview of the neck of the stud b. Figs.-
land show, respectively, the back and front plates detached and in side elevation. Mypresent invention has for its object the production of a simple, cheap, and eflfective supporter for hosiery, a supporter which may be readily operated and which will hold the rigid) back-plate having at its lower end a fabric of the hose firmly without tearing it. 1 In the annexed drawings the letter an indicates the 'suspender to which the supporter is secured, and b is a metallic (orat all events fixed stud bfwith-enlarged head, as is best seen in Fig. 4: of the drawings.
. 0 denotes the top or clamping plate, the same being connected to the Suspender a or to the upper portion of the back plate 5 by a short piece of elastic webbing d or by some other form of spring, by means of. which the clamping-plate a is held yieldingly. Plate 0 is formedw'tha central longitudinal opening 0", that terminates at its upper end in an. enlargement of a size suflicient to slip over the head of the stud b',-the rest of the said opening being slightly wider than the neck of the stud 6. Plate 0 is provided with a loosely-hinged extension 0 that serves as athumb-piece by means of which the plate 0' 7 maybe readily drawn downward against the pontractile force of the spring 1 whenever it is desired to fasten or unfasten the supporter. By reference to=Figs. 2 and 3 it will be seen i witha depression 6 adapted tocoact with the When the plates '6 c are in '2, and the upper edge portion of the hose is upper end and adapted to cooperate with the that the lower end wall of the opening in plate c is formed with a tongue 0 and that the neck of the stud b" is formed on'its lower side said tongue 0 their clamping positionsthat is to say, when they are assembled, as in Fig. 1the tongue .0 forces the fabric of the hose into the depression '6 and thus serves to prevent the accidental slipping of said fabric between the two plates. f
When it is desired to use my described device, the plates 6 0 are separated, as in Fig.
laid upon the plate 6 and stud b. The ex-' tension 0 is then grasped, the plate :0 is drawn down until the enlargement 6'- lies over the stud b, when plate cis forced down upon the plate 6. Plate 0 is then released, and the elastic cl immediately draws the said plate 0 upward until the tongue a forces the fabric of the hose into, the depression Z1 When it is desired to release the hose, it is only necessary to reverse the described operation. x
Myimprovedsupportermaybe'verycheaply produced, it is positive in itsaction, and may be readily operated.
. Having thus described claim 1. In a stocking-supporter, in combination,
a lower plate with rigid stud, an upper, slotted, plate having yielding connection at its my invention, I
said stud, said yielding connection adapted for attachment to some fixed part of the device, and an extension hinged to the free endof said upper plate 2:111 combination, a lower plate with a fixed stud having depression upon its lower face, an upper, slotted, plate having a tongue adapted to cooperate with the depression of the said stud, and a yielding connection between the said lower and upper plates. 3." In combination, a'lower'plate, a notched stud fixedly secured to said lower plate, and v a slotted upper plate formed with a tongue In testimony whereofI have signed my name; adapted to coact with the said notched stud, to this specification in the presence of two sub substantially as specified. I scribing witnesses.
4. In'combination, a lower plate, a notched I stud fixed thereon, a slotted upper plate with WASHINGTON VARS' a tongue adapted to coact with said notched Witnesses:
stud, and a flexible connection between the FRANK.H. ALLEN, said lower and upper plates. FRANK S. DEWIRE.
