PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. LEoNAED, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SASH-WEIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 752,235, dated February 16, 1904. Application filed May 25, 1903. Serial No. 158,697. (No model.)
To all whom it may concerm.
Be it known that I, JOHN T. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Bronx, New York city, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- W'eights, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of improvements in window sash-weights whereby the adjustments for accurately balancing the sash and for application of the weights are simplified, as hereinafter described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure 1 is an elevation of two sections of a sash-weight constructed and coupled in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is another.
elevation of the same in a view at right angles to the view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation in the same view as Fig. Qin a double arrangement for heavy sashes. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of part of a window-frame and side elevation of part of a suspended weight, showing the facility afforded by my improved construction for application and removal of the weights in use. Fig. 5isafront elevation of the apparatus represented in Fig. 4.
I make the weights either in single arrangement, as shown in Fig. 2, or in double arrangement, as in Fig. 3, according as they are r to be applied to light or heavy sashes, in
series of short sections or, preferably of cast 'metal formed with a prolongation 6, of each end of half the thickness of the intermediate body part, said prolongationsbeing disposed on opposite sides of the said body part, respectively, the extremities cof said prolongations being rounded to a radius of half the width of the body and the shoulders of the body part being recessed to the same radius, as at (Z, and said prolongations being centrally perforated at e for bolting the sections together in a flexible chain, the first link of which may be connected to the sash-chain It, and then the successive links may be connected together and inserted piece by piece through a short slot f in the plate g, forming the bottom of the sash-groove it of the window-frame 6, thus enabling the application of the weight into'the weight-chamber Z and its removal therefrom more readily than when other forms of sectional weights are used.
In Fig. 3 I represent the double arrangement of two single weights in one for larger and heavier windows, which is feasible by the end prolongation's of reduced thickness being on' opposite sides of the body a, respectively, whereby they overlap, so as to connect in a chain of uniform thickness, and the two series of pieces may be placed side by side, so that the prolongations of one end of the combined pieces are separated by a space m, in which the prolongation of the other end of the same, as a, but of another pair of pieces, may enter and be secured by a joint-bolt 0 One of the said prolonged parts of each weight-piece is countersunk for a taper screw-head, as q, and the other for a nut, as o,- for application of the. joint-bolts 0 without projections.
What I claim as my invention isl. The improvement in sectional sashweights consisting of such weights constructed in series of sections having overlapping end prolongations of opposite sides respectively, said prolongations axially perforated and pivot-bolted in a flexible chain adapted to be inserted into the weight-space through a slot of no greater length than the length of a weight-section.
2. The improvement in sectional sashweights consisting of such weights constructed in series of sections having overlapping end prolongations of Opposite sides respectively, with rounded terminals and concave shoulders, said prolongations axially perforated and pivot-bolted in a flexible chain, adapted to be inserted into the weight-space through a slot of no greater length than the length of a weight-section.
Signed at New York this 14th day of May,
JOHN T. LEONARD.
