UMBRELLA-NOTCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,178, dated February 16, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALFRED M. PEATE, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in umbrellas and parasols, and more particularly to the means for detachably securing the ribs in place, the object being to provide simple means for accomplishing this purpose whereby an umbrella or parasol may be easily and quickly put together or taken apart, thus facilitatin g and simplifying the process of manufacture and more especially the repair of an umbrella or parasol, making it perfectly easy for the owner to remove and substitute a new rib himself without the necessity of employing some one else to do it for him, which involves delay and inconvenience, as well as unnecessary expense.

With these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the socket-plate of the runner. Fig. 3 is a view of the cap-plate, and Fig. 4 is a view of the collar which looks the parts together.

A represents the rod of the umbrella or parasoli 1 1 are the ribs, and 2 2 the braces hinged thereto. The inner ends of the ribs and braces are provided with rounded knobs or balls 3 3. These knobs or balls are adapted to fit sockets i 4 formed therefor in the socket-plate 5 and the runner socket-plate 6, respectively. A disk 7 is loosely mounted on the sleeve 8 of the socket-plate and sleeve 9 of the runner, and these two disksare notched at the periphery. opposite each rib or brace, whereby to receive the latter in the closing of the umbrella or parasol. To insure a proper registry of these notches with the sockets in the socket-plates, a recess is formed, as at 13, to receive a projection 14. The function of these disks is to lock the knobs or balls in their sockets, and yet admit of their turning therein. Locking-collars 10 10 areloosely mounted on the sleeves 8 and 9, their function being to lock the disks in place against the socket-plates.

These collars are provided witha recess 11 at the'inner edge adapted to register with a pin 12 when it is desired to slide them away from the disks for the purpose of removing or inserting a new rib. The position of these pins 12 relative to the disks is such that they lock the sleeves against the disks when the sleeves are pushed up snugly against the'latter and turned until the notches therein are out of alinernent with the pin.

It will be observed that I form the top notches 5 and the runner 6 approximately alike, and one is therefore a substantial equivalent of the other, each forming a seat for and engaging the ball-ended ribs or stretchers, as the case may be.

In this way a simple and effectual means is provided for accomplishing the purposes mentioned in the preceding paragraphs of this specification.

It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,

In a notch, the combinationwith a socketplate provided with a sleeve, of ball-ended ribs received in the socket-plate, a disk and a collar loosely mounted on the sleeve, the disk removably retained in engagement with the socket-plate, the collar provided with a longitudinallyextending slot and a pin on the sleeve with which the-slot registers when the collar and disk are unlocked, the pin normally adapted to engage the end of the collar to retain the collar and disk against the socketplates to retain the ends of the ribs in posi: tion.
