UNITED STATES Patented February 16, 1904.
PATENT OFFIC BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,103, dated February 16, 1904.
Application filed r m 9, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RnssA C. WAGNER REIN- ERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keota, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Bed, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in beds, and more particularly to that class known as metallic beds.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and durable bed so constructed that the ends of the spread or outer covering may hang freely and gracefully in position, covering the foot-rail and giving the bed a handsome finish. i
A secondary object of the invention is to provide a novel form of foot-piece adapted to prevent longitudinal movement of the mattress, thereby permitting the under covering to be tucked beneath the mattress and securely held from displacement and at the same time permitting the outer covering or spread to be draped thereover in any desired manner.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement ofparts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a metallic bed constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Figf 3 is a front elevation of a modified form of footpiece. Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating a further modification, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of Fig. 4.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates my improved bed; 2, thehead and foot posts; 3, the side rails, and 4 the cross or end rails. Secured in any suitable manner to the lower ends of the foot-posts 2 or formed integral therewith are a pair of verticallyrdisposed arms 5, connected at the top use in connection with bow-foot beds.
Serial No. 151,882. (No model.)
by cross-rails 6 and'7, constituting the footpiece. The lower end of the arms 5 are each provided with an elbow 6, which space said arms a slight distance from the footboard, defining a passage therebetween to allow the spread or outer bed-covering to hang over the end of the mattress' Secured to the arms 5 in any suitable manner, as by welding, casting, or otherwise, and at points adjacenttheir free ends are dovetail socket members 7', adapted to receive corresponding tenons on the side rails 3, forming the frame of the bed, upon which the springs and mattress rest. The ends of the arms 5 extend vertically some distance beyond the side rails 3, forming a stop and preventing the mattress from slipping longitudinally and obstructing the passage formed between the arms 5 and the footboard, and also permits the under covering to be tucked beneath the mattress and retained in said position without the liability of being displaced, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawmgs. o
In making up the bed the ends of the sheets or other under covering may be tucked beneath the mattress, being prevented from displacement by the foot-piece, the end of the spread or other drapery being passed over the cross-rails and dropped into the passage or recess formed between the foot-piece and the footboard, where they hang gracefully, effectually covering and concealing the cross-rails and giving a neat tidy appearance to the bed.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified. form of the invention in which the foot-piece is formed -in two sections detachably secured together,
the ends "of the arms 5 being provided with sockets 8, adapted to receive the dowel-pins 9, formed on the upper section and by means of which said sections are secured together.
f In Fig. 4 I have-shown a further modification of the foot-piece designed particularly for In this .case the arms 5 are. dispensed with, the footpiece being formed, as shown, of two parallel horizontally-disposed bars 10, connected in any suitable manner to the sides or uprights 11, the ends of said uprights being provided with bifurcated end portions 12, adapted to In a bedstead, the combination of the head board, footboard and side rails, upwardlyextending brackets secured to the lower portion of the footboard and spaced therefrom, a and a foot-rail forming a part of the bed-frame carried by the brackets and'extended above the side rails to thereby prevent longitudinal movement of the mattress.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
RESSA C. WAGNER REINERT.
