UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY S. BREWINGTON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO W JLLIAM F. SEIM, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
JAR-CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,024, dated. February 16, 1904. Application filed May'fi, 1903. Serial No. 155,771. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY S. Bnnwrne'ron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to jar-closures; and the primary object of the same is to provide a jar and a closure so constructed as to insure a close and air-tight sealing of the jar by the mere forcing of the closure over the mouth of the jar.
A further object of my invention is to combine with the jar and closure a suitable gasket, flat or round-preferably flatwhich will serve the double purpose of a fastening means for the closure to the jar and at the same time perform the function of an air-tight packing therefor.
The invention consists of a jar formed adjacent to its mouth with an external annular shoulder and an external annular peripheral bead forming a recess above the bead and between the shoulder, whereby the packing-gasket is retained in combination with a closure or cover having an interior annular recess in the depending flange of the said closure or cover. A suitable packing-gasket is adapted to spread or roll downward around the rounded peripheral bead on the jar and into the recess of the closure or cover, whence forced downward, making a perfect sealing contact, as well as performing the function of holding the closure or cover firmly to the top of the jar. As the gasket spreads or rolls around the head on the jar it is forced into the recess in the depending flange of the closure or cover, whereby the bead on the jar spreads or rolls the gasket into the recess of the closure or cover. (In Patent No. 715,345, issued to me on the 9th of December, 1902, the construction differs, as shown, in that the cover goes inside the mouth of the jar, whereas this application refers to a cover or closure being placed on the outside of a jar.)
The construction of the improvements are more fully hereinafter described, in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and the novel features will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In Figure 1, the drawing is a View, partly vertical section and partly in elevation, of a jar and closure. Fig. 2 is aflat gasket. Fig. 3 is a round gasket.
In the drawings Fig. 1 shows a part section, the other part the outside view of a preserving jar or bottle. a is the body of the jar, which has an open neck provided with an external annular peripheral bead b, with a cone projection on the top of it forming an external annular shoulder g and a recess 0. cl is the closure or cover, which is large enough on the inside to pass over the two projections, as shown, and is provided near its lower edge with an annular recess 6, which receives and clamps the packing f over the bead b. The packing f can be either fiat or round, as shown in Figs; 2 and 3 in part, and in place in Fig. 1.
Having describedmy invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is- 1. The combination with a jar formed on its upper edge with an external annular shoulder and a rounded peripheral bead forming a recess between the shoulder and the head, of a closure comprising a'cover having an annular recess placed within the depending flange of same, and an elastic gasket surrounding the annular bead on the jar and spread within the recess of the closure substantially as hereinbefore described.
2. The combination with a jar formed with an external annular peripheral bead and an annular shoulder forming a recess. between said shoulder and bead, in which recess the gasket is laid, said recess having a rounded surface in the formation of the bead on the jar, of a closure or cover having an annular recess Within its depending flange and an elastic gasket spread downward on the bead on the jar and in the recess in the closure or cover whereby the gasket holds the cover firmly on the jar and acts as an air-tight packing substantially as hereinbefore described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification 1n presence of two Witnesses.
