PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLESv M. ATHEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
DISPLAY-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,137, dated February 2, 1904.
Application filed November 26, 1900. Serial No. 37,823. (No model.)
To a/Z whom t muy concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. ATHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Cases, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to the display of articles suoli as cigars, and my aim is to provide means for the packing of articles in a speciallyshaped box by the manufacturer and provide the retail dealer with a show-case of a corresponding shape adapted to receive thebox containing the goods, and as fast as one box is empty a fresh box is supplied to take its place. The purpose is to secure prominence for the goods and at the same time prevent the par# ticular show-case from being used for the goods of other parties.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view showing the outer case and the inner case in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view.
I do not limit myself in the use of the in vention to cigars or like products, as other articles may be displayed as well.
I prefer to make the outer case with a glass cover, as shown at the case itself being shown at a and composed of any suitable material. rIhe top is inclined and the glass cover is adapted to open, being manipulated through a handle (Z. The shape shown is very convenient, as it displays the goods well and is readily accessible to place the articles within reach of the customer. The box or package containing the goods from the manufacturer is shown in place in Fig. l and indicated by the letter c. rI`his may be of wood, cardboard, or any suitable material and conforms to the shape of the display-case except that it is a little smaller, so as to be adapted to fit Within the same. A ledge or support e is attached to the tapered end of the case c, so as to form a support for the iirst article placed in the box to bear against, which in turn is borne against by the otherA articles inthe box. Supposing the box c to be filled with cigars, the cover is removed and the box is inserted in the case c, which exposes the upper layer of cigars to View through the glass cover, and when the customer desires to purchase, the cover is swung upwardly and the cigars may be taken out.
It will be observed that the articles are adapted to completely fill the box, so that it contains no waste space nor space for other purposes, and hence it is especially adapted for transportation and display.
That I claim is- A display-case having a plain bottom, side walls having straight bottoms and end edges and inclined top edges, a perpendicular rear wall and an inclined top hinged to one of the walls and resting upon the said walls, said top and side walls being composed of atransparent substance, a portable case adapted to snugly viit within the first case, said portable case being of substantially the same shape as the display-case but minus a cover, and a ledge or support at the tapered end of the portable case.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
cHAs. M. ATHEY.
