PATENT OFFICE.
ENVELOP- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,350, dated January 26, 1904.
' Application filed June 1, 1903- Serial No 159,581. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLAUDE B. DENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raleigh, in the county ofVVake and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention combines with an envelop of any structural type or pattern means to facilitate opening after same has been sealed.
Within the purview of the invention a line of perforations is provided adjacent to and about parallel with an end of the envelop, and a band encirclesthe end portion separated by said line of perforations and may be located either within or without the envelop, the purpose being to reinforce the end portion and facilitate and insure the separation thereof along the line of perforations when opening the envelop to gain access to the contents thereof.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of an envelop embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the end portion of the envelop provided with the opening means. Fig. 3 is a section of a modification showing the reinforcing means arranged within the envelop. Fig. 4. is a perspective view showing the manner of opening the envelop by tearing ofi the end portion provided with the reinforcement and separated from the body of the envelop by the line of perforations. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of the preferred form i. e. with the reinforcing-band exterior to the envelop.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The envelop 1 is of ordinary construction, being provided with sealing-flap 2 of tapering form. A line of perforations 3 extends transversely of the envelop near toand about parallel with an end thereof to facilitate removal of the separable end when opening the envelop by tearing off the end portion exterior to the perforations 3. A band 4, preferably of cardboard, is secured to the tear-off or separable end of the envelop and may be located either external to or within the envelop, according to the finish of the article. This band 4 stiffens and reinforces the tear-01f end of the envelop, thereby insuring separation of same along the line of perforations. The band may be gummed to the envelop or affixed thereto in any substantial way. To prevent interference of the band with the sealing-flap, the inner corner of the rear portion is cut away, as
shown at 5, thereby admitting of the sealingflap being opened andcloscd preliminary to sealing the envelop after placing the note or other matter therein.
While cardboard is the preferable material for band 4:, metal or any other material suitable for the purpose may be utilized, so long as it insures separation of the tear-off end of the envelop along the line of perforations when pulling upon same about as indicated in Fig. 4.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is An envelop provided with a line of perforations adjacent to and about parallel with an end, and a band encircling the end portion beyond the line of perforations and aflixed thereto and having the inner corner of the rear portion cut away so as not to obstruct the sealingflap, substantially as specified.
