PATENT OFFICE.
ENVELOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.- 739,615, dated September 22, 1903. Application filed September 8, 1902. Renewed July 25, 1903. Serial No. 167,043. (No model.)
Fig. 2 represents a rear View of the envelop in closed condition preparatory to final sealing. Fig. 3 represents a front view of a portion of the envelop on a large scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates an envelop consisting of the front piece B, bottom flap O, the top flap D, the side flaps E, the tongues F and G on the lower corner of the flap C, and the safety-piece or guard H in the corner portion of the front. piece, said guard being partly severed from the remain ing portion of the piece, and the edges of the same are serrated as a preferred form.
The parts asdescribed form what I call the blank, to which adhesive material isapplied at the places shown, and in order to con vert the same into an envelop the side flaps E are folded inwardly one on the other and united by the adhesive material. The top flap D is turned down over the said flaps E and secured thereto by the adhesive material, thus forming the body of the envelop, which is open on the side toward the flap C, so that the envelop may be filled, as usual. The envelop, however, requires to be turned when the flap O, which has been below, becomes the top. Then the envelop may be closed and sealed, for which purpose the flap 0 is turned down over the flaps E and D and secured back of the flap D by the adhesive material. It will now be noticed that the tonguesF and G project in right-angular direction from the back of the envelop at what may be termed the stamp corner thereof. Then said tongues are folded over the front of the piece B and that of the guard H and the postagestamp stuck over said tongues and guard and the adjacent portion of the envelop, thus concealing said tongues and guard and effectively securing the envelop. If attempts are made to release the tongues by removal of the stamp or otherwise, then owing to the partly-severed condition of the guard from the remaining portion of the envelop said guard will be fractured or torn from its hold on the surrounding portion of the envelop, thus indicating to the receiver such an act, it being, however, noticed that portions of the tongues remain adhering to the front of the envelop, thus rendering the improper opening of the envelop at the upper corner of the back flap thereof one of difliculty. I
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is' p 1. An envelop having on the front piece thereof, a guard which is integral with said piece and partly separated therefrom and occupying the stamp-affixin g place on said piece, a closing back flap, and a tongue which is continuous of said flap and adapted to be folded from said flap over the adjacent edge of the envelop and upon said front piece and guard and secured to the latter.
2. An envelop formed of a front portion, top, bottom-and side flaps, a partly-severed guard on said front portion occupying the stamp-affixing place and tongues extending in a direction at aright angleto each other on one of the flaps and adapted to be folded on the outer face of the front piece of the envelop and upon said guard and to be secured thereto" by adhesive material.
3. An envelop formed of a front piece, top, bottom and side flaps, a guard integral with said front piece, and partly separated therefrom, said integral and partly separated guard occupying the stamp-affixing'place of said front piece and a tongue queue 'of said flaps provided with adhesive material and adapted to be folded over an edge of the envelop, the adjacent portion of said front piece and upon said guard and to be secured to the latter by said adhesive material.
4:. An envelop formed of a front piece, top, bottom and side flaps, a guard integral with said front piece and partly separated therefrom, and tongues on one of said flaps extending in a direction at a right angle to each other and adapted to be folded over the edges of the envelop at a right angle to each other, the portions of the envelop adjacent to said edges and one on the other and upon said guard and secured thereto, said guard occupyin g the stamp-aflixing place of the envelop.
5. In an envelop, a safety-piece occupying the stamp-affixing place on a Wall of the envelop, and partly severed from said wall,
10 top, bottom and side flaps, and tongues on one of said flaps at a right angle to each other, said tongues-being foldable overithe edgesof the envelop at aright' angle to each other and one on the other andfupon the partlyseparated guard and portio'ns of the envelop ad- I 5 jacent to said guard and edges;
