i zen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

, The object of my invention is to provide folding furniture, embracing chairs, settees, sofas, divans, cosy corners, &c., of an extremely simple and cheap form of construction, of great durability, and which will be easy of operation.

. To such ends my invention consists in substance of a suitable back of U shape, the lower part of the sides of which adjacent to the open end form the rear feet, a back bar connecting the two side pieces at the top of the feet portion, bosses securing the back bar to the U shape, a front bar provided with similar bosses at the ends, a seat pivoted at one end to the back bar and at the otherto the front bar, front feet pivoted in .the bosses at the ends of the front bar, arm-pieces extending from the tops of the front feet, the rear ends of which are turned downward, so as to removably t into holes in the rear bosses, and

a back piece connected at one end to the top and at the other to the back bar, although it is not to be understood that my invention is limited at once to the devices necessarily comprising at once all the devices and parts above set forth, as the same consists in the particular arrangement of certain devices and-parts, and the particular construction, combination, and arrangement of certain devices and parts, all as hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.

My said invention is fully shown and described in the following specication, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, wherein similar numerals of reference designate like or equivalent parts wherever found throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view in elevation of my vimproved folding furniture ready for use.

Fig. 4 is a view in detail of a portion of the furniture in the halffolded position, and Fig. 5 is a View of one of the bosses in central vertical section.

Referring to the drawings,usually the whole of the furniture is formed of metal or any other appropriate material. In any event the back and rear legs consist of a rod of suitable diameter bent into substantially .U shape, v

with holes or sockets 14, and also being cast` upon the ends of the back bar 15, so as to firmly secure the same in position. Front bosses 16, similar to the bosses 13, are cast in like manner upon the ends of the front bar 17 and through such bosses pass the front feet 18, which are capable of free pivotal movement therein and are usually kept from slipping up and down by suitable washers 19, firmly secured upon the front feet in any desired manner above and below such bosses, as shown. Such front feet extend upward in a front arm-piece 20 and then backward in side arm-,piece 21 and end in downwardly-extending securing end piece 22, which lit into the holes or sockets 14 in order to hold the device in position for use.

The bottom or chair-seat 23 is pivotally secured at the rear end to the auxiliary back bar 13 and at the front in like manner to the front bar 17, such seat 23 consisting of any appropriate material, and the pivotal' connection with the front bar and the auxiliary back bar being usually formed in a cheap but efflcient manner by simply curling the end of such seat loosely around the same, as shown at 24 and 26 in=Figs. 2 and 4.

Such furniture is usually providedv with a back consisting of a piece of flexible cloth 26,

secured at the upper end to the top bar 10 and at the bottom to the back bar 15 in any desired manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. A folding chair comprising a substantially U-shaped back-piece provided With a back bar some little distance from the open end thereof secured thereto by bosses, like bosses secured to the ends of a front bar similar to the back bar, a rigid seat pivotally secured at one end to the back bar and at the other to the front bar and a combined front foot and arm-piece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front bosses provided at the upper end with means for detachably securing the same to the rear bosses.

2. A folding chair comprising a substantially U-shaped back-piece provided With a back bar some little distance from the open end thereof secured thereto by bosses, like bosses secured to the ends of a front bar similar to the back bar, a rigid seat pivotallv secured at one end to the back bar and at the other to the front bar, a back secured at one end to the top bar and at the other to the back bar, and a combined front foot and arm-piece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front bosses provided at the upper end with means for ldetachably securing the same to the rear boss.

A folding chair comprising a substantially U-shaped back-piece provided with a back bar some little distance from the open end thereof secured thereto by bosses, like bosses secured to the ends of a front bar similar to the back bar, a rigid seat pivotally secured at one end to the be ck bar and at the other to the front bar, a combined front foot and arm-piece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front bosses provided at the upper end with means for det-achably securing' the same to the rear boss, and means for preventing sliding movement of the front feet in the front bosses.

A folding chair comprising a substantially U-shaped back-piece provided with a back bar some little distance from the open end thereof secured thereto by bosses, like bosses secured to the ends of a front bar similar to the back bar, a rigid seat pivotally secured at one end to the back bar and at the other to the front bar, a back secured at one end to the top bar and at the other to the back bar, a combined front foot and arm-piece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front bosses provided at the upper end with means for detachably securing the same to the rear boss, and means for preventing sliding movement of the front feet in the front bosses.

5. A folding chair comprising a substantially U-shaped back-piece provided with a back bar 'some little distance from the open end thereof secured thereto by bosses, like bosses secured to the ends of a front bar similar to the back bar, a rigid seat formed of stiftl sheet metal pivotally secured at one end to the back bar and at the other to the front bar and a combined front foot and arm-piece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front bosses provided at the upper end with means for detachably securing the same to the rear boss.

A folding chair comprising a substantially U-shaped back-piece provided with a back bar some little distance from the open end thereof secured thereto by bosses, like bosses secured to the end of a front bar similar to the back bar, a rigid seat formed of stiff sheet metal secured at one end to the back bar and at the other to the front bar, a back secured at one end to the top bar and at the other to the back bar, and a combined front foot and arm-piece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front bosses provided at the upper end With means for detachably securing the same to the rear boss.

7. A folding chair comprising a substantially U-shaped back-piece provided with a back bar some little distance from the open end thereof secured thereto by bosses, like bosses secured to the ends of a front bar similar to the back bar, a rigid seat formed of stifll sheet metal pivotally secured at one end to the back bar and at the other to the front bar, a combined front foot and arm-piece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front bosses provided at the upper end with means for detachably securing the same to the rear boss, and means for preventing sliding movement of the front feet in the front bosses.

8. A folding chair comprising a substantially U-shaped back-piece provided with a back bar some little distance from the open end thereof secured thereto by bosses, like bosses secured to the ends of a front bar similar to the back bar, a rigid seat formed of stiff sheet metal pivotally secured at one end to the back bar and at the other to the front bar, a back secured at one end to the top bar and at the other to the back bar, a combined front foot and arm-piece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front bosses provided at the upper end with means for detachably securing the same to the rear boss, and means for preventing sliding movement of the front feet in the front bosses.

9. A folding chair comprising a substantially U-shaped back-piece provided with a back bar some little distance from the open end thereof secured thereto by bosses, like bosses secured to the ends of a front bar similar to the back bar, a seat pivotally secured at one end to the back bar and at the other to the front bar, a combined front foot and armpiece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front bosses provided at the up- IOO IIO

lar to the back bar, a seat pivotally secured at one end to the back bar and at the other to the front bar, a back secured at one end to the top bar and at the other to the back bar, and a combined front foot and arm-piece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front bosses provided at the upper end with means for detachably securing the same to the rear boss, the top bar, back bar, front bar, back feet, front feet and arm-pieces being formed of metal rods, thetop bar and back feet being integral, the front feet and armpieces being integral and the bosses being cast in position thereon.

l2.` A folding chair comprising a back-piece provided with a back bar some little distance from the ends thereof secured thereto by bosses, like bosses secured to the ends of a front bar similar to the back bar, a rigid seat pivotally secured at one end to'the back bar and at the other to the front bar, a back of flexible material secured at one end to the top bar and at the other to the back bar, a combined front foot and arm-piece extending through and pivotally secured in each of the front' bosses, said arm-piece being provided With downwardly-turned ends tting into holes or sockets formed in the rear bosses.
