Be it known that I, CHARLES B. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States,- residing at New York, borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of .New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of boxes intended to contain phonograph or graphophone record cylinders or other similar fragile orV brittle objects which require a yielding or cushioned support to insure safety against breakage or other damage when being' handled or shipped.

The object of my present improvements is to provide a box of the character referred to that will be most eiiicient for the purposes intended and at the same time be very simple and economical in construction. This object Il obtain by means of the new and novel features of construction hereinafter set forth in detail and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a box embodying my invention with a record-cylinder contained therein. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal cross-section through the box. Fig. 3 is an inner side of one of the box ends,partly in blank form; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view to be hereinafter referred to.

In said drawings, l indicates the body of my improved box, which is usually formed of strawboard, although any other suitable material may be employed in its construction. This box is preferably made tubular in form, so as to conform to. the shape of the recordcylinder which it is intended to contain, and is provided with a centrally-arranged tube 2 secured therein, over which the record-cylinder (indicated at 3) is adapted to fit when placed in the box, the space between the tube and the inner wall of thebox being sufficiently wide to prevent contact of the outer face of the record with the box, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The ends of the box, one of which (indicated at A) is permanently attached thereto and the other (indicated at 5) is removable and constitutes the cover, are both provided with yielding seats on their inner or adjacent faces, which are adapted to engage with the opposite ends of the record-cylinder andyieldingly support the same therebetween. These `yielding seats in accordance with my invention are formed as follows: The said box ends 4 and 5 duringthe course of their formation are each provided with a series of slits or cuts 6 of uniformv length, as shown in Fig. 3, which radiate from a common center and terminate at a point distant from the outer periphery of the box end, as indicated by the dotted lines 7, so as to leave an uncut portion 8 of a width corresponding to the space between the outer wall l of the box and the inner tube 2. The circularly-arranged series of separated angular pieces or arms formed by the said slits 6 are then turned below the uncut portion 8 in a loose fold, so as to form a yielding seat or cushion 9at such point, the free ends of the same being preferably secured by an adhesive substance or other suitable means to the under side of the part `8, as indicated atl 10 in Fig. 4. After the box ends have been thus formed one of the same is permanently attached to one end of the outer tube or box-body 1 and the inner tube 2 by an adhesive substance or other suitable means, the outer tube being fitted within the usual outer flange l2 of the box end i and the inner tube being litted within the opening formed by the removal of the cushion pieces or arms 9, to one side of which latter the tube is attached. The other box. end (indicated at 5) is adapted for removable connection with the box and constitutes the cover for the same. This cover when in position on the box, as shown in Fig. l, receives the upper end of the inner tube 2 through its central opening, and thereby holds the same at such end against undue lateral movement or displacement.

A box made as thus described is obviously cheap and simple in construction and also most efficient for the purposes intended, as it will be understood that the seats or cushions 9 are-suiciently yielding to cushion any undue jar to the record-cylinder or other supported object that might be caused in shipping or by the dropping of the box, and so prevent breakage or damage to the same.

A further and important feature of the present box construction is that the box being IOO open at both ends through the central or inner tube 2 permits the loose ends of the paper or other covering within which the box may be wrapped to be readily inserted into such openings, thus insuring a neat appearance and also a greater rapidity in the wrapping of the same and also permits a string or similar fastening to be passed therethrough to more securely fasten the cover on the box.

Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat; ent of the United States, is-

l. A box of the character described, comprising a body portion and a removable cover therefor, the said cover having an integral inwardly-folded arm forming a cushion, for the purpose set forth.

2. A box of the character described, comprising a bodyiportion having an integral inwardly-folded arm forming a cushion, for the purpose set forth.

3. A box of the character described, comprising a body portion and a removable cover therefor, the said cover and. the opposite Wall or end of the box being each provided with an integral inwardly-folded arm forming a cushion, for the purpose set forth.

4. A box of the character described, comprising a body portion and a removable cover therefor, the said cover and the opposite wall or end of the box being each provided with a plurality of integral inwardly folded arms forming cushions, for the purpose set forth.

5. A box of the character described, comprising a body portion and a removable cover therefor, the said cover and the opposite Wall or end of the box being each provided with a.

circularly-arranged series of inwardly-folded portions forming opposing yielding cushions, for the purpose set forth.

6. A box of the character described, comprising a body portion having one end thereof provided with a circularly-arranged series of integral inwardly-folded portions, whereby an opening is formed in such end wall, a tube secured at one end within said opening, and a cover for the box.

7. A box of the character described, comprising a body portion and a removable cover therefor, the said cover and the opposite end Wall of the box being each provided with a circularly-arranged series of integral inwardlyfolded portions, whereby an opening is formed in the same, a tube secured at one end within the opening in the box-wall and at its opposite end being received within the opening in the cover when the latter is on the box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

8. A box of the character described, coniprising an outer tube or body portion, an inner tube, an end piece permanently attached to said tubes at one end, and an end piece removably connected to said tubes at their opposite ends and constituting the box-cover, the said end pieces being each provided on their inner or adjacent sides with loosely-folded radially-arranged cushions located between the adjacent Walls of the tubes, for the purpose set forth.

9. A box of the character described, comprising an outer tube or body portion, an inner tube, and a part loosely folded upon itself in a position between said tubes to form a seat or cushion that is yielding both laterally and longitudinally relatively to the box, for the purpose set forth.
