TO ALL WHOM4 IT MAY CONCERN:`
Beit known that-1, JAc'oB BRINKERHOFF, of the city ofI Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, and State of' New vYork, have `invent-,ed a. new and uscfnl'lmprove'inent in Corn-Shellers; and I d'0 hereby declare that the following is an exact andfull description of my 'said' improvements, reference being had tol-he accompanying drawings for a more deiinite understanding thereof. l j
l'do not attemptin this specification, to describe all the vparts of my corn-sheller, butronlyfsuch parte thereof as constitute my ,present improvement, and those other parts most directlymonnected therewith. For a full description of my machine, :ts-made by,n1e previous to my present improvement, reference is made tothe specification and drawings annexed to Letters `.Patent granted to mevfor an improvement in corn-shellermbearing date February 28, 1865, and, numbered 46,540. OF the drawingsg Figure l represents a top vie'w of the machinery of the sheller, the covering-being removed.
Figure 2 represents the series ofvregulators or pressure-blocks, each with its spiralfspring attached thereto, and the movable'back-hoard, 4towhielnthe other ends of the spiral springs are attached. I
Figure 3 represents-one of saidpressure-blocks, with/its spiral spring attached, `and a section ofthe movable hack-board. Y
' H H HH H H represent aseriesof regulators or pressure-blocks, which are placed parallel with the side of the cylin'del-.Eand along the entire length thereof. vThese regulators or pressure-blocks pla-y horizontally in an opening made to receivefthein, between the piecesL and K. They'rare each Vformed of twopieces' of Wood,"v
glued or otherwise closely tted, and firmly fastened together, in such manner and in such relative positions Vin rela-tion to cach other, as that a shoulder is forined upon three sides of the Aouter piece, anda. shoulder upon one side of the inner piece. The shoulders upon the top and' bottom of Vthe outer Ypiece-'tn' that nearest y the Y cylinder,V press against the piccesLand vK, Ywhen at rest, and when the enr of corn or the lcob is suiiiciently small to ass between the c linclcr and the face of the renlator, without ressin a einst itwith suiiicie'nt'iorce P y a P i g g to move it from its place of rest. These pieces, L andK, preventthese regulators orA pressure'blocks fromy coming in contact with th'eknobs or spikes upon the cylinder. The shoulder upon the side oiithe outer piece presses at all times upon or against the shoulder upon the side'of the inner piece of the" double blockV or regulator, adjacent and next thereto on-the left, and the movement of `each is reciprocallyaii'ectedA byi the other, V,
inasmuch as no movement can be made by th blool; on the right, without in some degree aiecting' the position of the block next adjacent thereto on the left thereof. l v
To the hack of each of these regulators or pressure-blocks is attached,` aspiral spring, 'Vain theV shape-of an hour-glass, the other end whereof is fastened to al movable vhack-board,'6, which is fitted inside ofthe frame A for that purpose. The shape of this spiral spring enables these'regulators to be moved in variousdirections with great ease, and to act and react upon each other, as more or less of them areV crowdedbackvby the ear of, corn, as it is pressed'against .the face of the blocks while beng'shlled.` YThese series of regulators cbrplessnre blocks, being thuseaoh separate from the other, and yetr s o arranged, relative'tojeach other,'as greatly toini1uence each other, and each having its independent and separate spring, which mayyethe actednpon by the movementof the `regulaton orl pressure-block` next adjoining the. block to which itfis attached, fform, in their combined operation, when the sheller is at work, 'a continuous iexible but VariabIeseres of-springs, the' parte whereof readily accommodate and adjust themselves tothe shape, size, and Alength ot' eanor piece of corn which" muy, for the time beng,be operated upon in front thereof, and this cor'istitutesv aigreat improvement in' mycorn sheller, as by this arrangement` of pressure-hlocl s and spiral springs, so'many only are broughtvintb voperation at thesame time as will sutioe-toact upon the whole length of the unshelled ear'or piece of corn, which may,-
at the time, be front thereof, the balance thereof remaining at rest, and requiringno motive-power Whatever to be used or Wasted upon them. i v
The operation of this improvement is asv follows As the ear of corn is placed inthe hopper, it fallsbetween the face of these regulators or pressure-blocks and the cylinder; `As the cylinder revolves, the knobs orrspikes thereon catch against the ear and turn it, and press it downwards-upon `the bed-piece At the same 'time such portions of thcffaces of these pressure-blocks as are brought in contact with the ear, pressy against it and hold it to the cylinder, while the knobs or .spikes thereon, `with the aid oi' the sharp corners upon'the4 'bed-piece d quickly shell the corn from the cob, and as the ear orcob, asthe case maybe, is thus caused 'to oll upon the bed-piece, by reason of the mot-ion thus imparted to it hy thelcylinder, it at'the same time passes downwards, along and upon the said bed-piece d, u ntil it-reaches th .openingEJ through which it passs'4 A fi-ouai the r'nzchine completely shelled, and drops upon the Hoor.. As the ear orcob passestoivards said-opening, the pressure-blocks :behind itare relieved and at rest, ready for another ear,` and this operation is repeated als often' as ears are received from the hopper.
Having thus fully described myimproveme'nt, and its mode of operation, ivhatI claim asy new, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, s 4
i' The series of ll'egulators or pressure-blocks`, each with its independent spiral spring, combined nn'dairanged substantially as andvfor the purpose herein' set forth.
