To ALL WHOM rr MAY conocen;
13e it knon"n that I, GEORGE W'. BRADY, of the city, county, and State lof NewYork, have invented a new and improved Safety-Attacllrnent to Railroad-Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,- and exact description thcreovwhich will' enable others skilled in thea'rt to'mnko .and use the saine, reference Fignre 1 represents-aside elevation, partiy in section, of a railroad-car provided with my improved safetyattachment.. v
Figure 2 is .an inverted plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail .end vien' of-an axle-box..
Sbi'imila'r'letteis of reference indicatecorresponding parts.
This invention relates toa new arrangement for preventing accidents on railroad-cars, and'consis'ts in the use-oi n sliield"a1'rnnged around the wheels in such a manner that by the'same any obstruction .on' the track Vwill. be pushed off, so that the wheels of the ear, cannot pass over and inj'ure persons that may be lying or falling upon the track. This ,shieldis arranged so that it can. slide up and down, and is, by mea-ns taf-springs, held.
down'. Itis thus-,made Hexible on'thoar, for'the purpose of allowing'it to pass over small obstructions, snich as sm'all'stones, dec., and to-resume its original position'at'ter' it has thus passed over, and also to allow the body of the car to more upland don-n.. s 4 Y W. I Y e A represents th'eplatforinof any'suitahle kind of vrailroad-cart B B are the axles, C C, the wheels; D D,-
the axle-boxes. The' latter arejitted in pedestals, 'E E,vof suiteible or ordinary construction. F-F are springs 'ai-ranged each side 0fV the axle-boxes, resting on theyolce J J, said yoke resting across the top of the axleboxes. B B, the :irmsof yoke J J, clamping the sides of axle-boxes B B, `and projecting through the pedestals E E, the ends of yoke J.' J having tapering dove-tail tenons, broader at the bottom than at'the top, the ends of yoke J J clas'ping the outside ends of pedestals E hhactingl as a brace to the frame, on which the shield is atliiced.
G G are the shields, ,which are plates made of sheet metzil, or of wire netting, or any'other snitnble'material, laid along the outsideof each wheel, and bent in, at .both ends,'so as to cover the edges of the'wheel, as is clearly shown in lig. These plates or shields are, by'means. of edsor braces b b, attached to or connected `with metallic slides, H H, which are plates vhaving tapering dove-tail grooves corresponding to the tenons a, fitted over and upon'the said tenons, as shown. When the' shields are thus secured to the axle-yoke they cannot be any further lowered, oil accounty of the/tapering form of the tenen and groove, butthey can be raised4 as far as' necessary, stops Vof any description indicating 4and regulating the heightto whichl the shields can be raised. Between the slides H andV `the platform of the car are interposed springs Il, of any suitableconstruction, for
the purpose of keeping the shields down, still allowing them to be reliscd when necessary; .When the shields are down as farA as possible, their lower edges will just elettr the track without touching the same.
It will he seen that, by me'nns of this attachmentfthe frequent accidents by railroad-cars will be consider-v ably lessened, if not Wholly abatechf The tenons a can, it' desired, be forined on the-slides H, in which case the grooves are in the ends of the axle-boxes.
I lclaim as new, and desirerto secure by Letters Patentl s 1. The shields G, when connected with slides II, which are fitted upon tapering ilove-tail er other tenons.
. a u, formed on the ends of the yoke J, which rest upon the axle-boxes of railroad-cnrs, substantially as herein i shown and described. 1 i 2. The above, in-colnbination with the springs I I, arranged as' and for'th'e purpose set forth.
I 'cleiin the yoke J, resting upon and {itt-ingnround the axle-box, and extending "down tho side of the pedestal, the said yoke having af dove-tal tonen on `each end, to which the metallic slide connected with the shield-frame is attached...
