IMPEOVED GAR-A XLE CAP.'

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCE'RN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WERTS, of Pana, in thc county of'Christian, and State of Illinois, have Iinvented. a new and useful Improvement inl Oar-Axle Cap;` and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clearLand exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formi-ng part of this specication, inwhieh- Figurel is a detail sectional View ot' my improved car-axle cap, taken through the line xx, tig. 2. Figure 2 is a side view of the same. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding'parts.
.My invention has for its object to furnish dnimprovcd cap for car-axles, which shall be sifnple in construction, effective in operation, .and easily opened and closed.
And it consists in the construction ot' the door, and iu the manner of hin'ging and seclir'ing it, as h'ereinafter more ,fully described. f Y
A is the body or box of the cap, about the construction oi' which there is nothing new.
Upon the under side oi thedoor B of the cap A is formed adove-tailed groove, b1, as shown in iig. 1.
This groove lextends all around the side and end edges of the door B, and is either formed in the solid body of said door B, or isformedin aseparate' piecevorpeces, and riveted or otherwise securely attached to the inner side oi' said door.
C is a rubber packing, the upper side of which lenters the dovetailed groove b1 of the door B, so that it may always bc in connection with and in proper positionl upon 'said door.
When the door B is closed the lower side of therubber packing rests upon the seat of the said door, so as to make the joint between 'the door B and box or cap A entirely clse, and thus eiectually guar-d against the ingress of dust or sand.
Uponthe rear endof the door B is formed an ear, b2, `to which is pivoted the upper end or eye of thebolt D, which passs down through a hole in the end of the chamber E, formedupon or attached to the side of the box or cap A. l
y F is a spiral spring, placed upon the bolt D, within fthe chamber E, and the lower eud'ofiwhich rests against a nut, d, screwed upon the lower end et' said bolt D i The upper end of the springF rest-s against the upperend of the chamber E, or against a washer placed upon said bolt, and interposed between the4 upper end ofthe spring F and the upper end of the chamber E. By this construction, by adjusting the position ofthe nut ol', thetcnsion of the springF may be regulated at pleasure. p i
Upon the forward end edge of the door B is formed a slotted projectiom'bs, the upper side of which is grooved or notched transyersely, andthe forward end of which is bevelled ofi' or inclined, as shown ings. 1 and 2.y G is a bolt, which passes down through a slot in the upper endoi the chamber H, formed upon or attached to the side of the cap `or'box A. l I Upon the upper end ofthe4 bolt G is formed a cross-head, g1, the lowcrsidc of said cross-head being so fdrmed as to it into the groove or notch formed upon the uppersideof the projection b3, as shown in iig. 1.
' I is a spiral spring, placed upon the boltlG, 'within the chamber H, the lower end ofwhich rests against the nut girserewed upon the lowerv end of said bolt G, I
Y 'The upper end of the Vcoiled spring I rests against the upper end of the chamber H, or against a washer placed-loosely uponI the bolt G, and interposed between the end of the said spring and the .end of the said chamber. i
By this construction, by adjusting the nut g2, the tension 'of the spring may be regulated to hold tle door B closed with any desired power.
- I claim as new, and desire to 'secure by Letters Patenty y Y 1. The combination ofthe eye-bolt D, coiled spring F,'and. chamber E, with cach other, with thc door B, and with the capot'- box A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
'2.' The combination of the Across-head bolt G, coiled spring I, and chamber H, with `each other, with the notched or grooved slotted projection '63, formed upon the door B, and with th'e capl or box A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose s et forth.
' WILLIAM WERTS.
