To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ACOB HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention has relation to improvements in trusses; and it consists in the novel construction of truss more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the application of my double truss. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional detail on line 1 4 of Fig. 5, showing the pad and leather piece carrying the same. Fig. 5 is a face view of the leather piece. Fig. 6 is a plan of the coupling device for the waist-band. Fig. 7 is a side view thereof, and Fig. 8 is an end View.

The object of my invention is to construct a truss whose pad shall remain in place under any and all circumstances, the parts being so disposed that a displacement of the pad is impossible.

In detail the invention may be described as follows:

Referring to the drawings, L represents the bridge-piece or leather piece, at either end of which the pads P are mounted. These are preferably secured by means of a disk 1, disposed along the outer face of the leather piece, a screw 2 securing the several parts together. Disposed on eitherside of the screw 2 on the. disk 1 is a pin 3, over whichis passed the locking-plate 3, forming one of the terminals of the waistband 4:, the latter being secured to the plate by a gripping-lever 5, as is common on suspender braces, a construction well known and not claimed herein. Pivotally carried at diametrically opposite points on the disks 1 are rings 6 6, to which the opposite ends of the shoulder-braces 7 are attached, the braces passing over the shoulder in front and rear and passing between the limbs under the trunk of the body B. The lateral adjustment of the braces" along the chest is effected by means of transverse breast-straps 8, whose ends are respectively secured to one brace in front and the corresponding brace along the back, Figs. 1, 2.

Adapted to draw the leather piece downwardly are the leg-straps 99, passing about the leg and secured along the lower edge of the leather piece by eyes 10 and loops 11. To firmly couple together the bases of the rear of the braces 7 and the front of the waistband, thereby preventing the latter from working upward, I employ cords 12, which pass around the rear of the body below the waistline, as best seen in Figs. 1 and 2.

Where the rupture is on one side only, a single truss is employed, as best seen in Fig. 3, the parts being substantially the same as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, except that only one side is equipped instead of both sides.

It is to be remembered that the several braces, straps, and cords are equipped with adjustable buckles 13, as is common in suspenders, to adjust the several parts to the size of the individual.

I do not wish, of course, to be limited to the precise details of construction here shown, as they may in a measure be departed from without affecting the nature or spirit of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- A truss comprising a bridge-piece, pads carried thereby, shoulder-braces adapted to girdle the trunk, a waistband coupled to the opposite ends of the bridge-piece, leg-straps for drawing down the bridge-piece, breaststraps encircling the chest and having their opposite ends secured to the corresponding members of the shoulder-braces in front and in the back, and cords coupling the front of the waistband to the rear lower ends of the shoulder-braces, and passing around the body below the waistline, substantially as set forth.
