To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VINCENT BAIL, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State ofMassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Doors and Sashes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The improved fastening device is fully and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through the door casing or jamb and the adjacent closed portion of the door and through the fastening device, which is shown as in its door-locking position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the fastening device as in its door-locking position, a certain appliance comprised in the fastening being shown as operative in a different disposition from that shown in Fig. 1,.

Fig. 3 is a face view of the fastening device, and Fig. .4 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view as taken on the line 5 5, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of parts of the device.

Between the outer side of the cam mand the shoulder or enlargementz' of the stud is a plate 0, apertured to be penetrated by the stud and serving as a washer between the outer face of the cam and head of the stud to give adequate width of bearing, and its extension 0 also serves as a handle for conveniently sliding the locking-block C, rotation of this plate 0 being prevented by the engagement of its inner extremity in an aperture 12 in the angular member f of the slide-block.

Before the door is closed and with the bar in its position and engagement on the doorcasing, as shown, the slide-block D is understood as slid endwise onto the hinged extension g and with such extension swung angularly to the length of the bar proper, as indicated in the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The doorengaging member f then constitutes no impediment to the closing of the door. Then the extension g is swung into line with the bar and the slide-block is slid to bring the parts to the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and

the cam-lever is swung so as to by being re- .sisted by the cam-face j and crowded outwardly force the stud to draw its base portion to a firm binding against the under side of the bar, thereby locking the slide-block in place on the bar and preventing the door from being opened, it being understood that the thin portions y of the block render its bottom resilient to permit the cam, which is resisted by the upper portion of the slide-block, to draw the under portion thereof to bind on the bar. The hinged part g constitutes a member onto which the block I), having the door-engagement lug f, may, when desired to be free from its door-locking position, be'slid and by which be swung to the position represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, whereby while the appliance remains in its connection on the doorjamb the said lug f will have a position of nonobstruction to the opening and closing movements of the door. It will be perceived that the inner or door-jamb-engaging extremity of the bar is formed inclined or wedge-shaped, as indicated at q, the same widening toward its end, this portion having the effect to insure the door ordinarily closing with a crowding fit in the jamb.

In some cases where the door may be so shrunk as to leave considerable space between its edge and the door-casing this condition is provided for by the provision of the supplemental plate t, the same being as wide as or a little wider than the bar C and having opposite ears 25 t overlapping the opposite edges of the bar, which is grooved, as at u a, small pivot-studs 4) extending inwardly from the cars into sliding engagement with the grooves u. This plate t may lie, as shown in Fig. 1, with an inclination on the inclined extremity of the bar, contributing to fill the superfluous space between the edge of the door and the casing, and when in this disposition it exerts a crowding force edgewise against the door, so that its hinged opposite edge will be forced against the opposite casing, advantageous under some conditions for the exclusion of cold air at the hinged edge of the door.

In cases where the door sets quite closely within the casing and the supplemental plate at is not needed or would not be accommodated between the edge of the closed door and the jamb the plate may have the disposition right angular to the length of the bar and in facewise bearing against the angular member f of the slide-block. (Indicated in Fig. 2.)

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a locking device of the character described, the combination with the bar having a longitudinal slot, and means for its engagement with the edge of the casing, of an angular slide-block embracing the bar and slidable therealong and having a rigidly-united stud extending through and beyond the slot, and provided with a shoulder at its extremity, a cam encircling and rotatable about said stud,

having a cam-face adjoining the face of the block, and exerting a crowding pressure against said stud-shoulder, and a member for turning the cam.

2. In a locking device of the character described, the combinatiom with the bar constructed with a hinged extension, provided with a longitudinal slot, and having means for its engagement with the edge of the casing, of an angular slide-block embracing the bar and slidable along the bar proper and onto its hinged extension and having a rigidly-united stud extending through and beyond the slot, and provided with a shoulder at its extremity, a cam encircling and rotatable about said stud, having a cam-face adjoining the face of the block, and exerting a crowding pressure against said stud-shoulder, and a member for turning the cam.

In a locking device of the character described, the combination with the bar having a longitudinal slot, and provided with an inclined inner portion and having means for its engagement with the edge of the casing, of an angular slide-block embracing the bar and slidable therealong and having a rigidly-united stud extending from its base through and beyond the slot, and provided with a shoulder at its extremity and constructed with a cam-face at its outer side, a cam encircling and rotatable about said stud, having a cam-face adjoining the cam-face of the block, and exerting a crowding pressure against said stud-shoulder, and a member for turning the cam, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

i. In a locking device of the character described, the combination with the bar having edge grooves, having the inclined end portion, and having a longitudinal slot, and means for its engagement with the edge of the casing, of an angular slide-block embracing the bar and slidable therealong and having a rigidlyunited stud extending through and beyond the slot, and provided with a shoulder at its extremity, a cam encircling and rotatable about said stud, having a cam-face adjoining the face of the block, and exerting a crowding pressure against said stud-shoulder, and a plate having opposite ears embracing the grooved edges of the bar and having studs projected inwardly into sliding engagements in and along said edge grooves of the bar substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a locking device of the character described, the combination with the longitudinally-slotted bar having means for securing it to the casing, of a block having an angular member at one end and having its base or body apertured and adapted for an embrace about, and sliding fit along, the bar, and the under portion of said block having a rigidlyaflixed stud extending through the slot in the bar and extending outwardly beyond the block, and having at its end a shoulder, said block having on its outer face concentric with the stud a cam-surface, a cam rotatable about the stud and coacting with said cam-surface of the block, and a member encircling the stud next to its shoulder against the inner face of which the cam bears, having a projection extending to engagement with the angular member of the block and having an endwise-projected handle.

6. In a locking device of the character described, the combination with the edgewisegrooved, and longitudinally-slotted bar having means for securing it to the casing, having the inclined inner end portion, and having the hinge connected extension at its outer end, of a block having an angular member at one end and having its base or body apertured and adapted for an embrace about, and sliding fit along, the bar, and the under portion of said block having a rigidly-affixed stud extending through the slot in the bar and extending outwardly beyond the block, and having at its end a shoulder, said block having on its outer face concentric with the stud a cam-surface, a cam rotatable about the stud and coacting with said cam-surface of the block, a plate encircling the stud next to its shoulder, against the inner face of which the cam bears, having a projection extending to engagement with the angular member of the block, and having an endwise-projected handle, and the plate having the opposite ears provided with studs inwardly projecting into sliding engagements in said edge grooves of the bar, substantially as described and shown.
