Be it known that I, BENNo voM EIGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful i Improvements in Match and other Boxes; and

provements in that class of match and other boxes comprising -a metallic box or case, a

pair of ornamental edge strips, and one or more ornamental face-plates, made of metal,

or other suitable material, bearing a design or picture or other ornamental matter or for the purpose of placing suitable printed matter thereon.

The principal object of this invention is to provide in the class of match-boxes of the character above stated `a novel means of attaching the face plate or plates and edge strips easily to the body of the box or case I without any use of solder or rivets, as heretofore, preferably byproviding the said body of the box or case and parts of the edge strips with perforations which register with each other and the face plate or plates with holding prongs or tongues which are inserted in and passed through the'said holes or 'perforations and then bent over against the inner face or faces of the body of the box or case, thereby providing a safe and positive as well as a simple and cheap means for securing a face-plate in position against the side of the box or case without any danger of the faceplate working loose or becoming displaced, as is now the case with thisclass'of matchboxes as ordinarily made.

Other objects of this invention not at this time more especially mentioned will be clearly understood from the following description of my invention.

. The invention consists, therefore, in the novel construction of match-box hereinafter ,1

`set forth; and, furthermore, the invention consists in the various arrangements and combinations of the parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be fully described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

rlhe invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 a face View of a match-box made according to the principles of my present invention; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, illustrating the means of securing the ornamental face plate or plates and edge strips to the body of the box or case by means of holding prongs or tongues connected with the face plate or plates. Fig. 3 is a face view of the box or case with the edge strip or strips in position, but with the face-plate removed; and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the body of the box or case with both the face-plate and edge strips omitted. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional representation, on an enlarged scale, of the body of the box, its edge strips, both provided with the registering perforations, and the pronged face-plates, illustrating the manner of inserting said prongs ,in the said perforations and then bending them over against the inner faces of the body of the box or case. Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views, respectively, of one of the edge strips and a face-plate. Fig. 8 is a face view of the body of a match-box and a pair of edge strips, one of which is represented in its detached `position from the one edge ofthe box, the said view representing a slightly-modified arrangement of securing the edge strips in place before the attachment of the face-plate; and Fig. 9 is a detail vertical-section, taken on line 9 9 in said Fig. 8 and upon an enlarged scale.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In the said drawings the reference character l indicates the body of a match box or case,

and the same comprises` the two sides 2, the ends 3, the bottom 4, and the usual hinged cover 5. The said sides may be provided with the usual ornamental beads 6, and near the edges 3 of the box or case the 'said sides 2 are made withl suitably-disposed I holes or perfo- Y rations 7, as will be seen from Figs. 2, 4, 8, and 9.

Suitably arranged over the outer faces of the edges 3 of the body of the box or case 1 are suitable edge strips 8, preferably of metal, the said strips being made channel shape, as illustrated, and their leaves 9 being sprung over the edge portions of the sides 2 of the box or case 1 and having holes or perforations 10, which register with the holes or perforations 7 in the sides 2 of the box or casing, as illustrated. rlhe said leaves 9 of the edge strips 8 may also be made with ornamental beads 11, as indicated in the drawings; but these beads are not essential and may be dispensed with. rIhe holes or perforations 7 in the sides 2 of the box or case and the holes or perforations 10 in the leaves 9 of the edge strips, as indicated in the construction of match-box represented in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, are made of the same size, or approximately so, the edge strips 8 being held in place by frictional Contact of the leaves 9 with the body of the box or case v1 prior to arranging the face-plate 12 against the outer face of a side 2 and against the leaves 9 of the two edge strips 8 upon the opposite ends 3 of the box. As illustrated, the said face plate or plates 12, which are preferably made of metal and are provided with any ornament, such as a picture or design or advertising matter, are provided along their marginal edges or at any other points with downward extending holding prongs or tongues 13, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings. These prongs or tongues 13 are passed through the registering holes or

10 and 7 of the edge strips 8 and the sides 2 of the box or case and then bent over against the inner faces of the said box or f case, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 ofY the drawings. It will thus be clearly evident that by providing the face plate or plates 12 with the holding prongs or other holding means forming an integral part of the faceplate and inserting the same through the holes or perforations of the edge strips 8 and the sides 2 of the body of the box or case and then securing said holding vmeans against the inner face of the box or case a simple and cheap fastening means for securing the parts together has been provided and with the linal result that all the parts of the box or case are securely united and there is no possibility of the face plate or plates working loose or becoming detached, as is so often the case where the face-plates and the edge strips aresoldered fast to the body of the box or where the faceplates have their edges slipped beneath and held in position by means of guides or receiving portions connectedvwith the edge strips.

` In Figs. 8 and 9 I have represented a slightlymodified means for attaching the edge strips 8 in position upon the ends 3 of the body of the box or case 1 prior to securing the face plate or plates 12 in position by means of their holding prongs or tongues 13. In this construction, as will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 8, the holes or perforations 7 in the sides 2 of the box or case are made of greater length than the holes or perforations 10 in the leaves 9 of the edge strips 8, and when the edge strips are arranged upon the ends 3 of the body of the box, with the smaller holes or perforations 10 arranged above the larger holes or perforations 7 by means of a proper die or other tool, the edge portions 14 (see Fig. 8) are stamped out at the opposite edges of the holes or perforations 10 to provide the said edge strips with downwardly-extending holding-lugs 15, which extend into the said holes or perforations 7 in the sides 2 of the box or case 1, as represented in Fig. 9 of the drawings, and thereby prevent the longitudinal slip or displacement of the said edge strips 8 from the body of the box during the process of manufacture and prior to positively and inally securing the said edge strips or pieces and the ornamental face-plates in position in the manner above specified.

From the previous description of my invention it will be seen that I have devised a simple and neat construction of match and other box in which the edge strips and the face plate or plates are easily and quickly assembled and are positively secured together without the employment of solder or rivets,where by there is a great saving in cost of material and in time and labor.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In abox, the combination, with the body of the box and its edge strips, of a face-plate, and means on said face-plate arranged for holding engagement with said edge strips and the body of the box, for securing the said faceplate and said edge strips in fixed positions upon the body of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a box, the combination, with the body of the box and its edge strips, of a face-plate, and integrally-formed holding-prongs on said face-plate arranged for holding engagement with said edge strips and the body of the box, for securing the said face-plate and said edge strips in fixed positions upon the body of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a box, thevcombination, with the body of the box and edge strips, the said body of the box and edge strips being provided with holes which register with each other, of a faceplate; and holding means on said face-plate extending through the holes in said edge strips and the body of the box and in holding engagement with the inner faces of the body of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a box, the combination, with the body of the box, of a pair of edge strips, holdingleaves on each edge strip arranged'to embrace v the ends of the body of the box, the said body of the box and the leaves of the edge strips `being provided with holes which register with each other, a face-plate and holding means on said face-plate extending through the holes in the leaves of the edge strips and the body of the box and in holding engagement with the inner faces of the said body, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. In abox, thecombination, With the body of the box, of a pair of edge strips, `holdingleaves on each edge strip arranged to embrace the ends of the body of the box, the said body of the box and the leaves of the edge strips being provided With holes which register With each other, a face-plate, and `prongs on said face-plate extending through the holes in said leaves of the edge strips and the body of the box, said prongs being bent over against the inner faces of the said bodyfsubstantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7 In a box, the combination, With the body `of the box, provided with holes, of a pair of-` edge strips, holding-leaves on each edge strip arranged to embrace the ends of the body of the box, the leaves of said edge strips being provided with holes which register with the holes in the body of the box, holding-lugs extending from the said leaves in engagement with portions of the body of the box, a faceplate, and holding means on said face-plate extending through the holes in the leaves of the edge strips and the body of the box and in holding engagement With the inner faces of the body of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set` forth.

8. In a box, the combination, With the body of the box, provided with holes, of a pair of edge strips, holding-leaves on each edge strip arranged to embrace the ends of the body of the box, the leaves of saidedge strips being provided Withholes which register with the holes in the body of the box, holding-lugs extending from the said leaves in engagement With portions of the body of the box, a faccplate, and prongs on said face-plate extending through the holes in said leaves of the edge strips and the body of the box, said prongs beingbent over against the inner faces of the said body, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. v,
