PATENT OEEICE.
ALBERT F. FULLER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE J. E. MERGOTT COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
MATCH OR OTHER BOX.
y SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,447, dated January 26, 1904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. FULLER, a
` citizen of theUnited States, residing at Newark, lin the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match or other Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference more particularly to improvements in metallic cases provided upon one or more of its sides with a sheet or sheets of paper. celluloid, or other suitable material, such as metal, for the purpose of placing printed matter thereon, such as an advertisement, or for the purpose of placing other ornamental mattersuch as a design, picture, or the like-upon the side or. sides of match-boxes and other suitable cases usually carried in the pocket.
My present invention has for its principal object to provide a simple and cheap means for attaching certain edge plates or members to the box proper without the use of solder or rivets, as heretofore, .the said edge plates being made with holding portions extending above the sides of the match or other box which form suitable holding-guides for the reception and retention of a card of paper, celluloid, or4
other plastic material or of metal against the side of the body of the box.
Other objects of thepresent invention will be clearly evident from the following specification.
My present invention therefore consists in the novel means for securing a card or plate bearing printed or other matter, such as a picture or a design, to the side or sides of a metal casing or box, and, furthermore, thisinvention consists in the various arrangements and combinations of parts, all of which will be herein- Applioationlled .T une 1, 1903. Serial No. 159,591. (No model.)
after more particularly described, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 'in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation .of a match-box provided with a card and holding means embodying the principles of this invention; and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the box and holding means, but with the card omitted from said view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, the said section being taken on line 3 3 in said Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the edge plates employed with the holding means for retaining the card or plate in position.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said hereinabove-described views to indicate corresponding parts.
In the present case I have illustrated my invention as applied to an ordinary match-box 1, made of metal and comprising the sides 2, the ends 3, the bottom 4, and the usual hinged cover 5. The sides and ends are provided with the usual ornamental beads 6 and 7, between which a card or plate 8 of paper, celluloid, metal, or other analogous material and bearing printed matter, such as an advertisement or a picture, or other suitable design, is arranged usually against the outer faces of the two opposite sides 2 of the box.
Suitably arranged against and about the outer surfaces of the ends 3 are a pair of channel-shaped edge plates 9, provided with the side pieces 10, which are arranged against the surfaces of the sides 2 of the box or casing 1 and have the outwardly curved or bent edge portions 11, which extend slightly above the faces of the sides 2 to form suitable receiving portions or holding-guides 12, beneath which the marginal edge portions 13 of the said card or plate 8 are arranged in the manner represented inFigs. l and 3 of the drawings. Heretofore these edge plates 9 were secured to the ends 3 of the box or casing by means of solder or rivets, both of which modes of fastening are slow and expensive, and to overcome these objectionable and slow methods of securing the edge plates or side pieces 9 in position and to dispense with the use of solder or rivets, as heretofore, I have stamped in the sides 2 of the box or casing 1 during the process of stamping up the same by means of thedie a series of holes or perforations 14, and the marginal edge portions 11 of the edge plates 9 I provide With slits, so as to form suitable holding lips or prongs 15, which are inserted through the holes or perforations 14 in the sides 2 of the box or casing and then bent over by means of a suitable tool against the under surface of the said sides 2, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. It Will be evident that the parts can thereby be quickly assembled, and the side or edge plates 9 being secured in position Without the use of solder or rivets a neater device Will be the result and there will be a great saving in time, cost of materials, and in labor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a match and other box, the combination, with the body of the box provided with holding portions, of edge plates having marginal guide or receiving portions, and means connected with said guide or receiving portions in engagement With the holding portions of the body of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a match and other box, the combina-l tion, With the body of the box provided With holding portions, of edge plates having marginal guide or receiving portions, means connected with said guide or receiving portions in engagement with the holding portions of the body of the box, and a card bearing a design or printed matter on its face having its marginal edges arranged beneath said guide or receiving portions of the edge plates, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a match and other box, the combination, with the body of the box provided With receiving-openings in its sides, of an edge plate at each end of said box, and holdinglugs on said plates arranged in said openings and bent over against the under surfaces of the sides of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
1. In a match and other box, the combination, With the body of the box provided With receiving-openings in its sides, of an edge plate at each end of said box, a marginal receiving portion connected with each edge plate, and holding-lugs on said plates arranged in said openings and bent over against the under surfaces of the sides of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. In a match and other box, the combination, with the body of the box provided With receiving-openings in its sides, of an edge plate at each end of said box, a marginal receiving portion connected with each edge plate and holding-lugs on said plates arranged in said openings and bent over against the under surfaces of the sides of the box, and a card bearing a design or printed matter on its face having its marginal edges arranged beneath said marginal receiving portions, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of May, 1903.
ALBERT F. FULLER.
