SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 749,050, dated January 5, 1904. Application filed'August 29, 1903. Serial No. 171,205. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC A. FRASER, a resident of the city ofProvidence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Blowers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to steam-blowers for producing forced draft in boilers, and has for its object the production of a blower whereby steam is forced in jets from a plurality of hollow rings to draw a large body of air from the outside of a furnace or boiler through a tube or funnel and force the same in great volume up amid the mass of fuel upon the grate'of the furnace to facilitate the combustion of the same.
My invention is fully described'in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is alongitudinal section of the tube or shell and steam-rings within it, said section being taken approximately on line 1 1 of Fig. 2, which latter figure shows the rings removed. Fig. 2 is a front view of the two steam-rings removed from the tube. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the recess in the bellshaped mouth of said tube, said recess being for the reception of the bosses on the steamring for the pipe connections. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the bell-shaped mouth of the tube, taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, A is the tubeor shell, constructed, preferably, of metal and is made slightly tapering, being somewhat smaller at its inner end and rounding out into a bell shape at its outer end or mouth. Into the flaring bell-shaped mouth of this shell A is set a large hollow ring 0. This ring is in the circular form shown, the exterior wall thereof being substantially fiat and conforming to the contour of the bell-mouth of shell A, the inner wallibeing convexed and provided with a forward face arranged on a bevel or at a slight angle and is provided with a series of apertures D,through which the steam is forced. On the top and bottom of this ring 0 are the bosses O O, which bosses fit into corresponding recesses B B, made for their reception in the walls of the mouth of the shell. These bosses O O are to receive the threaded steam-pipe and exhaust or drip steam-ring O is a smaller hollow steam-ring,
E, circular in form and, like the larger ring, has a series of small apertures F, through which the steam is forced. This ring E is suspended and supported from the large ring 0 by means of the steam-pipes e e. In the pipe e is the union e which is for the purpose of facilitating the connection of the middle ring.
The operationrof my device is further explained as follows: The tubeor shell A may be attached to the ash-pit door or set in the brick wall of the boiler and held in place by suitable brackets G G, bolted to the shell, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The steam-pipe C may be led from the boiler to the rings in any suitable manner and suitable shut-off valves employed to control the flow of the same.
I The essential feature of my invention is the-use of a tapering shell or tube having a bell-shaped mouth,into which mouth is placed two or more steam-rings, one located within the other, the holes in both of the rings being so located that the steam emitted therefrom spreads just enough to completely fill the small end of the shell, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
It is found in practice that by the use of this center ring in connection with the outside ring a perfect distribution of steam is obtained, completely filling the tube. The steam thus injected moves rapidly inward,
' carrying with it a large quantity of air, forcing the same with great velocity by the use of but a small quantity of steam up through the tightly-packed fuel on the grate, materially increasing the combustion of the same,
and consequently the efficiency of the boilers.
By so effctively distributing the jets about the mouth of the tube through which the steam is emitted a minimum quantity of steam may be used to produce the maximum amount of Work.
In the construction above described I obtain a very powerful draft with but little expenditure of power, and by using but little I conforming to the contour of said bell-mouth,
steam I reduce the cost of operating and also perceptibly reduce the noise which usually attends the operation of these machines and which heretofore has been a very objectionable feature.
The device is extremely efn'cient, as well as very simple and practical in construction.
Having, thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A steam-blower comprising a tube, and a steam-ring supported in the mouth thereof, the exterior wall of said ring conforming to the contour of said mouth, said ring being provided with a plurality of outlet-orifices.
2. A steam -blower comprising a tube, a steam-ring supported in the mouth thereof, the exterior wall of said ring conforming to the contour of said mouth, an inner ring concentric to said former ring, said rings being each provided with a plurality of outletorifices.
3. A steam-blower comprising a tube havinga bell-mouth, and a steam-ring supported within and conforming to the contour of said mouth, said ring being provided with a plurality of outlet-orifices.
4. A steam-blower comprising a tube having a bell-mouth, and a steam-ring supported in said month, said ring having an outer wall the inner wall of said ring being convex in cross-section, said ring being also provided with a plurality of outlet-orifices.
5. A steam-blower comprising a tube, and a steam-ring supported within and conforming to the contour of the mouth thereof, said ring having a forward beveled face provided with a plurality of outlet-orifices.
6. A steam-blower comprising a tube having a bell-mouth, a steam-ring supported in said mouth, said ring having an outer wall conforming to the contour of said bell-mouth, the inner wall of said ring being convexed in cross-section, and an inner ring concentric to said former ring, said rings being each provided with a plurality of outlet-orifices.
7. In a steam-blower, a tube having a bellmouth, recesses being formed in the walls of said mouth, a steam-ring mounted within said mouth and conforming to the contour thereof, and bosses formed on said ring and fitting within said recesses, said ring having a plurality of outlet-orifices.
