COMBINED AIR INJECTOR AND EXHAUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,334, dated September 5, 1893.
Application filed November 11 1892. Serial No. 451,599. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SALYER REED EARLE, mechanical engineer, of the city of Belleville, in the county of Hastings, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Air Injector and Exhauster, (in addition to the improvements contained in patents granted me and numbered 447,563 and 453,831 and bearing dates March 3 and June 9, 1891, respectively,) of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my present invention are first, improvement of the supply of air by taking the same from over the boiler instead of from directly surrounding the steam dome, second, improved form of the case or body of the injector so as to gradually concentrate the jets of steam in the nozzle, and third, improved form of the nipples through which the steam jets pass. I attain the above objects by the means illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, in which similar numbers of reference refer to similar parts throughout.
Figure 1, represents. a cross section of a boiler and its brick setting at a point slightly in front of the steam dome and on line with my invention shown in position. Fig. 2, represents a detail view of a portion of the air pipe at the cut off valve therein. Fig. 3, represents a cross-section of the cut off valve shown in the previous figure, and showing the same partly closed. Fig. 4, represents a side elevation of the form adapted for use in the horizontal position and represents only the body of the nozzle and taps thereon. Fig. 5, represents a detail sectional view of the body of the nozzle and steam nipples within of the form adapted to stand vertical. Fig. 6, represents a central section through the steam chamber. Fig. 7, represents a central section through one of the steam nipples, and Fig. 8, represents a View of the steam jet nipples or blowers as seen looking through the nozzle portion.
In my present form of air-injector and exhauster the body is composed of three portions securely bolted together by flanges and bolts as shown, and is divided into the receiver, 1, the nozzle, 2, and the elbow, 3, which is secured to either the receiver, 1, or nozzle, 2, according as the invention is for use in the vertical or horizontal positions, respectively. The nozzle portion, 2, of my present form is substantially a cone for the greater portion of its length, or height, and varies in this respect from my previous form which was less conical but had an enlargement at its larger end which formed when the two portions, (the nozzle, 2, and receiver, 1) were secured to gether, a globular chamber, inside of which was secured the blower jets, somewhat similar to the present jets, 4. The elbow, 3, is attached to the receiver, 1, in the horizontal form of blower as shown in Fig.4, and in the vertical form of adaptation it is secured to the enlarged mouth of the nozzle, 2, and is made with a base, 5, on which it rests and by which it is secured to its support to stand upright and support the air pipe, 6, which is preferably of sheet metal and secured by means of a flanged collar, 7, riveted thereon, to the upper end of the receiver, 1. In the receiver,1, the same or similar transverse steam pipe, 8, is employed having a thimble, 9, connecting the center of the said steam pipe, 8, to a drum, 10. The drum, 10, has a series of peripheral pipes, 11, radiating therefrom, which have an elbow, 12, in each, alike and turned in the same'direction so as to discharge parallel to one another.
On each pipe, 11, and on the central straight pipe, projecting from the end of the drum, 10, is fitted a nipple, 14 having the conical interior shown by Fig. 7, and a small outlet vent, 15, in the end.
The steam pipe, 8, is an integral part of the receiver, 1, and at its opposite ends has a plug, 16, and a supply pipe, 17, connected thereto, the latter leading from the dome of the boiler equipped with my invention. On the admission of steam through the valve, 18, on the supplypipe 17,a strong blast is formed through the nipples, 14, by causing a partial vacuum in rear of said nipples, 14,which causes a strong suction through the receiver, 1, and the air pipe, 6, leading to the heated air above the boiler, which heated air is caused by radiation of heat from the boiler. In the air pipe, 6, one elbow, 19, therein is required to bring the enlarged or flared mouth, 20, of the pipe, 6, to the required location over the boiler.
In the pipe, 6, and conveniently near to the lower end thereof is located the cut 0E, 21,
constructed of flanged rings, 22, secured together by their flanges for half the circumference and by means of a suitable spacing piece between the flanges where secured by rivets, 23, or an allowance for the purpose, the disk, 24, is provided for and is composed of sheet metal and formed as sh0wn-a circular disk having similar projections on its periphery and almost diametrically opposite, which form the hinge on which it swings, and a means by which to operate the disk.
By means of pipes arranged for the particular use my invention is of great utility for blast or smelting furnaces, cupolas, and for lifting the shavings and wood dust from wood working machinery. In the latter use the pipe, 6, would have its mouth, 20, located near the source of dust instead of over the boiler, and the deposit of same would be conveniently near the furnace in the engine room.
