To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ULYssEs GRANT DEN-.
STEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oamden,in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Gas-Checks, of which the following is a specification.
One object of the present invention is to provide a gas-check suitable for use in, among other things, lighting and adapted to be conveniently adjusted and yet when adjusted to remain so against accidental displacement.
To this and other ends to be hereinafter set forth the invention, stated in general terms, comprises two tubular members having sliding connection with each other and whereof one is provided with a needle and the other with an orifice, an operating-nut having right and left handed threads respec- 2o tively engaging these members to cause them to slide in respect to each other, and a locking-nut for clamping and unclamping the parts; and the invention further comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the followingdescription,taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevational view of an adjustable gas-check embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view illus- 5 trating the parts detached, and Fig. 4 is a top or plan View, partly in section, illustrating the bottom member of the check.
In the drawings the member 1 is threaded for attachment to a gas-pipe and is provided with an upwardly-extending needle 2 and with upwardly-extending pins 3. Through its top are arranged gas openings or passages 4. The member-5 isfitted with a needle-hole 6 and with sockets 7 for the reception of the pins 3. The needle2 of course cooperates with the needle-hole 6. The seat8accommodates an air and gas mixing tube. (Not shown.)
9 is an operating nut or sleeve provided with right and left handed screw-threads which engage the members 1- and 5. Thus when turned in one direction it serves to move them apart and when turned in the other direction it serves to move them together, and at the same time it prevents the escape of gas from between the members.
10 is a locking-nut which cooperates with the operating-nut 9.
When the locking-nut 10 is clear of the 0perating-nut 9, the latter may be freely turned, and by turning it in one direction or the other the members 1 and 5 are shifted toward or away from each other, so that the needle 2 regulates the elfective area of the needlehole 6. The pins 3 permit the members to move toward or away from each other, but prevent them from rotatingin respect to each other. After the parts have been properly adjusted the locking-nut 10 can be screwed against the operatingmut, and when this is done the parts are held to position against accidental displacement.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described. the nature and ob- 8o jects of the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An adjustable gas-check comprising two members having sliding connection with each other and whereof one is provided with a needle and the other with a needle-hole, an
operating nut or sleeve having right and left handed threads engaging said members, and a locking-nut, substantially as described.
2. An adjustable gas-check comprising two members having pin-and-socket connections 'between them and whereof one is provided with a needle-hole and the other with a needle cooperating with the needle-hole, an operating not or sleeve having right and left :0 handed screw and thread connection with said ULYSSES G. DENSTEN.
