GASHBURNER FOR BILLIARD-TABLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,904, dated February 19, 1889.

To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. FOLMER, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burners :for Billiard- Tables, of which the followingis a specification. l
I will describe a gasburner embodying my improvement in detail, and then point out the novel features in claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a gas-burner embodying my improvement. l Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. is a vertical section of a portion of the burner, taken on the plane of the line a a', Fig. l. Fig'. e is a transverse section of the same, taken on the plane of the line y y, Fig. 3. y
A designates a gas-supply pipe, which may extend from any suitable fixture.
B designates the shell of a gas-cock, secured to the supply-'pipe A by means of a nipple or coupling-piece, a', on the shell of the cock.
O designates the plug of the cock. The plug of the cock for that portion thereof which extends into the shell is inade tapering and lits a correspondingly-tapered cavity in the shell. The plugl is provided with a longitudinally-extending gas-passage, a', and another gas-passage, c?, opening at one end into the gas-passage a', but extending at approximate right angles to the latter. The passage c? also opens into a central cavity, o?, formed in a nipple or nozzle, C, madeas here shown, integral with the main body of the plug of the cock and extending' at approximate right angles thereto beyond the shell B.
Communication between the su pply-pipe A and the gas-passage a of the plug is afforded bymeansot' a short gas-passage, a", extending at approximate right angles to the passage a and occupying such position inthe plug' that when the latter is rotated sulticiently far the passage from the su pply-pipe and the passage a will intercmumunicate. lt isnot intended in practice, however, that the communication between the supplypipe A and the passage CL4 shall ever be wholly closed. To accomplish this I provide the plug' of the cock with a circmnferential groove, a5. (Shown in Figs. 3
and l.) This groove affords communication between the gas-supply pipe and the passage ai. I prefer to make the groove tapering. In other words, it will be deepest where it joins the passage a4, and will gradually vanish upon the surface of the plug. The object of this will bemore fully explained hereinafter.
One end of the shell B of the cock is shown as recessed. XVithin this recess is arranged a coil-spring, l). This coil-spring surrounds an outwardly-extending portion, 1)', of the plu g of t-he cock. It abuts at one end against the shell of the cock and at the other against a washeigbz. Outward movement of the washer 'b2 is prevented by means of a cross-bar, D,
rigidly secured to the portion D of the plug of the cock. The spring i) operates to hold the plug' of the cock firmly in its seat. The outer end of the portion b of the plugI is grooved to receive the cross-bar D, and the latter is secured at. about midway in its length within said groove, as here shown, by means of a screw, c. The cross-bar I) is employed to rotate the plug of the cock. I have shown chains d secured to the cross-bar near the ends of the latter. Bypulling upon one or the other of these chains, as required, the plug of the cock may be rotated in any desired direction.
lThe cavity a3 in the nozzle or nipple O of the plug' is internally screw-threaded to receive a pipe, d?. In the other end of the pipe d2 is secured a burner-tip, (Z3. The pipe d2 and. the tip d3 constitute the burner proper.
E designates a globe, of glass or similar material. This globe rests at its lower edge in a metallic globe-holder, e, which latter is provided centrallywith an opening through which extends the pipe d2. The globe-holder is also perforated to form an air-distributer. Its outer edge is turned upwardly to form a Iiange, e, extending about the lower edge of the globe. Lips or lugse"2 on the Bange e may be bent over the lower edge of the globe to retain the lat-ter in position. The globeholder e has a pivotal connection with one end ot' a link, F. The latter near its other end is in the example of my improvement shown provided with a longitudinal slot, f.
