Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM B. CARRIOK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,997, dated March 3, 1903. Application filed April 28, 1902. Serial No. 104,962. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. OAEEIoK, a citizen of the United $tates, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to gas-burners, and particularly to that class thereof having a pilolli-light supplied by a by-pass through the coo a The object of the invention is to form a burner of the class described having means whereby the pilot-light will light a plurality of jets simultaneously.
. The invention is particularly applicable to cluster-lights of the incandescent kind and serves to light all the jets of the cluster at once.
Generally speaking, the invention consists of a burner located adjacent a cluster of lights, which burner is provided with a pilot-light and has several nipples 0r openings which project flame in all directions laterally, so as to ignite the main jets surrounding said burner.
In the accompanying drawings,'Figure 1 is an elevation of the device, a cluster of burners surrounding the same being indicated in dotted lines. vention detached, part of an inclosing tube being broken away. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the valve-casing, which is screwed to to a T in the main supply-pipe 15. The casing contains a cock 7, which, in addition to the main passage, has a by-pass common in constructions of this character. The main passage communicates with a pipe 8 and the by-pass with a small pipe 9. The upper end of the pipe 8 is provided with a number of lateral discharge nipples or openings 8 and with a spreader 8 above the same. The pipe is Fig. 2 is an elevation of my in-' extended high enough, when used in connection with a cluster of lights having chimneys, (indicated. at 14,) to bring it above the tops of the chimneys. The small pipe 9 supplies the pilot-light at the top thereof, which is inclosed by the usual mica chimney, (indicated at 10.) One arm of the cock has a pull-chain 11, and the other arm has an opposing spring 12. A chain 11 may be conveniently attached to the main shut-off chain in case such be used.
In operation when the chain is pulled, the gas to the main lights 14 being turned on, the main passage of the cock is opened and the gas flowing from the nipples is lighted by the pilot-light. The direction of the nipples and the action of the spreader cause the flame to be projected laterally across the tops of the chimneys of the cluster, thereby igniting the burners thereof. When the chain is released, the spring closes the main passage and opens the by-pass, igniting the pilot-light and extinguishing the burner.
It will be seen that by this construction a cluster of lights may be lighted from one pilotlight.
An inclosing tube is indicated at 13, surrounding the pipes 8 and 9 and acting to protect the same and to support the mica chimney.
What I claim is- 1. The combination with a cluster of burners,of a lighting attachment therefor comprising an independent burner having means to spread the flame laterally in various directions, and an independent pilot-light for the burner.
2. The combination with a cluster of burners, ofan independent burner-tube projecting above the burners, laterally-directed jetnipples at the top of said tube, a pilot-light adjacent the nipples, and a valve controlling the flow of gas to the burner-tube and pilotlight.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. OARRICK.
