Be it known that I, WVILLIAM B. OARRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Im- 3 provements in Gas-Lighting Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a gas-lighting attachment designed for use in connection with a cluster of burners; and it consists, in addition to other parts to be hereinafter described, of a spreader for directing the flame toward each of the burners, a pilot-light for lighting the spreader, and a valve controlling the supply of gas to the burners, the spreader, and the pilot-light, said valve being operated by pull-chains and having novel construction and method of operation, as hereinafterspecified.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and Figure 1 thereof is an elevation of the cluster of burners. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail, in side elevation, of the valve casing. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are details in front elevation, showing the valve in three positions. Fig. 7 is a detail in cross-section through the valve. Fig. 8 is a plan of the valve-plug.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the burners of the cluster are indicated at 6, supplied through branch pipes 7 from a main supply and hanging pipe 8. This pipe is incased or inclosed by an inverted-bell-shaped reflector 9, ornamented at the top by a rim 10. The reflector has openings 11, through which the chimneys of the burners extend, and within the rim or bell are smoke bells or shields 12 to spread the heat. The burners are arranged in a ring around the central supply-pipe and reflector, and a very advantageous distribution of light is thereby produced.
Located within the bell 9 is a spreadertube 13, having laterally-projecting jet-openings 14 at the top, adapted to direct a flame toward the top of each burner-chimney. Adjacent the spreader-tube is a pilot-tube 15, also located Within the neck of the bell 9. These tubes lead from the valve-casing 16, located just above the junction of the main and branch pipes, and a screw 17 serves to regulate the amount of gas delivered to the spreader-tube, and the screw 19 regulates the amount delivered to the pilot-tube. There I is a by-pass 19" extending through the wall of the valve-casing from the main pipe to the pilot-tube, and this by-pass is always open, so that the pilot-light is always burning. The valve-plug is indicated at 20, having a crosspiece 21, connected to the pull- chains 22 and 23. The valve has a main groove 24 extending circumferentially around the same, and communicating with this groove is an axial bore 25. The groove 24 extends somewhat more than half way around the plug, so that gas is supplied to the burners in all positions of the valve except a special shut-off position. The bore 25 communicates near the inner end of the plug with two ports 26 and 27, the former of which communicates with the spreader-tube and the latter with the pilot tube by appropriate passages in the valve casing.
At 28 is indicated a spring which is properly secured to the valve-casing and conveniently coiled around the stem of the valve and extends outwardly at one free end, where it is provided with a hook 29, with which the cross-bar 21 will engage. The spring, however, is prevented from rising above a certain point by a confining-loop 30, which in closes the same.
The shut-off position is shown in Fig. 4. In this position the chain 23 has been pulled to the full extent, turning the valve so that the supply-pipe is closed. To light the gas, the chain 22 is pulled to the position shown in Fig. 5. This opens the main passage to the burners and also the port 26 to the spreader-tube and the port 27 to the pilottube, and gas flowing through the spreadertube is ignited by the pilot-light and spread to the chimneys of the burners, which burners are thus lighted. The chain 22 is then released, and the spring 29 at once lifts the cross-piece to the horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 6, in which position the main supply-pipe to the burners is opened and the ports to the spreader and pilot-tube are at all times, however, by means of the bypass 19.
I claim 1. The combination with a cluster of burners, and a central depending supply-pipe for the same, of an inverted-bell-shaped reflector extending around the pipe within the burners and having openings through which the burner-chimneys extend, and a gas-lighting closed. The pilot-light remains burning low attachment located Within the reflector and having means to direct a flame toward the chimneys.
2. The combination with a supply-pipe, and a cluster of burners, a spreader and a pilot-light, supplied by the pipe, of a valve in the pipe controlling said supply, and having an operating-arm, and a spring projecting into the path of the arm and arranged to be struck thereby to return the same after movement, the action of the spring being limited and adapted to stop with the Valve in open position With respect to the burners,
and in closed position With respect to the spreader and pilot-light, the arm being mov- I 5 I able away from the spring and beyond said position, to close the passage to the burners and open the passage to the pilot-light.
