SHELDON JOSEPH, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTH TO WILLIAM F. SHAFFER, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, AND JOHN HUNKER, OF CONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-'FIXTU RE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,961, dated May 12, 1903.
Application filed April 3, 1902. Serial No. 101,240. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SHELDON JOSEPH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Wheeling, county of Ohio, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvementsin gas-burners, and more particularly to a fixture for gas-burners consisting in the novel construction of a main gas-nxture body in' which the burner or burner-brackets are mounted and in which certain novel gas-sup-` ply-regulating devices are situated.
The objects of myinvention are to providel an adjustable supply-regulating valve forgas-burners which is especially adapted for incandescent gas-lamps or gas-lights, to supply a fixture or main body of the above-referred-to class provided with a packing which renders the same leakage-proof, to provide a fixture or main body having a by-passage therein and adjusting means whereby the 4supply of gas therethrough may be regulated forming a part of this specification, ingwhichy Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention as applied to a gas-lamp or drop-light. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same through the burner arms or brackets. lar section of the same on the line' 3 3, Fig.
1. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same, en#
larged, on the line 4 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of a modification of my invention, the same being adapted to an ordinary bracket gas-light. Y
Similar reference-numerals designate simi-` lar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, 1 is the feed-pipe or main gas-supply pipe, to which is screwed the main body or fixture 2, having, preferably, inte- Fig. 3 is a simi`-,
gralburner arms orbrackets 3. Said main 5o body 2 is provided with a central screwthreaded channel or cavity 4, with which said burner-arms communicate. Said channel 4 is tapered substantially as shown at its upper end, forming a small valve-seat 5 at the point of communication with the feed-pipe 1.
6 is a regulating pin or valve provided with a tapering point '7, adapted to be adjusted in Vthe tapered end of the channel 4 to regulate the gas-supply from thefeed-pipe l or to Wholly cut off said supply when driven home against the valve-seat 5. Said regulatingvalve 6 is provided with a screw-threaded surface 8, which is of greater circumference than the shank 9 of said valve, said screw-threaded surface extending from the base of the tapering point 7 downward to a point below the burner-arm openings. The screw-threads of said surface 8 mesh with the threads of the main body 2 in the' channel4.
The shank 9 of the regulating-valve is cylindrical in shape and hasl thereon a loose washer 10, adapted to beforced up against the shoulders 11 at the inner-.end of the bore 13 inthe main body 2. Also loosely mounted on said shank 9 is a plug'12,adapted to be screwed up within the said bore 13 against a packing 14, provided about said shank between the washer 10 andsaid plug 12. When my invention is applied to a gas-lamp, as shown in Fig. 1, the shade or globe holder may be adjusted on the said plug 12.
15 is a thumb-screw in a threaded hole or opening 16, provided in the main body 2. Said hole 16 communicates at its inner end with a small hole 17, which in turn communicates at its inner end with a shallow groove or chan-4 nel 18, provided in the main body2 about- 'the threaded channel 4, and which communicates with the passagesthrough the burner arms or brackets 3. Extendingobliquely from the supply end or socket in the main `body2 to the inner end of the hole 16 is a by passage gas-inlet 19. The valve 6 being adjusted to cut oft' the maingas-supply,when the thumb-screw 15 is adjusted in theposition shown in Fig. 3 the gas will follow the by-passage inlet 19 to the hole 16, thence to the small hole 17, thence to the groove 18, and thence to the burner-arms 3. As is apparent, by adjusting the set-screw or thumbscrew 15 in the hole 16 the supply of gas through the by-passage may be regulatedthat is, by its manipulation the gas-supply through the by-passages may be increased, diminished, or entirely cut olf at will.
In Fig. 5 is shown a slight modification of the construction of the main body 2 to adapt it to the usual form of bracket-burner; but, as will be seen, the material parts ot my invention remain the same.
As is obvious from the foregoing description of my invention, by manipulation of the valve G the same may be adjusted to regulate the supply and pressure of gas through the main gas-supply opening or to cut off said supply altogether, and by manipulation of the set-screw 15 the same maybe adjusted to regulate the supply of gas through the bypassage or to cut ott said supply altogether.
By using the packing 14 a leakage-proof valve is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a gas-burner, a main body, carrying burner-brackets, attached to the feed-pipe and provided with a central passage of uniform bore supplying gas to the burners, said passage being screw-threaded throughout, an adjustable pin in said passage for regulating the supply of gas through the said passage to the burners, said pin having an enlarged threaded portion near its point the threads of which mesh with the threads of the central passage, abypassagein said main body whereby a small supply of gas may be furnished the burners when the main supply-entrance is closed by means of said adjustable pin; said ley-passage comprising a channel extending from the feed end of the main body to a screwthreaded hole, said screw -threaded hole communicating at its inner end with a small hole, said small hole communicating at its inner end with a groove in the Wall of the central passage, and said groove communicating with the burner-brackets; and a set-screw in said screw-threaded hole by which the supply of gas through the bypassage may be regulated, the said set-screw being adapted to be driven longitudinally into the screw-threaded hole past the gas-inlet thereto from the said channel leading thereto, substantially as described.
2. In a gas-fixture, the combination with a main gas-supply pipe, of a main fixture-body attached to said supply-pipe, said main body carrying burner-brackets and provided with a central threaded bore of uniform size and threaded throughout, a regulating-valve in said central bore whereby the supply of gas to the burner-brackets is regulated, said valve consisting of a pointed pin having a threaded enlargement thereon near its point meshing with the threaded bore, a reduced shank to said valve, a Washer on said shank, a plug on said shank adapted to be screwed up as a closure in the rear end of the main body, a packing between said plug and said washer, a lay-passage adapted to supply gas to the burners when the main gas entrance or passage is closed; said by-passage comprising a series of passages extending from the feed end of the main body to the burners, and an adjustable set-screw in one of said passages whereby the supply of gas passing through said by-passage may be regulated, the said set-screwbeingdrivenlongitudinallythrough one of the passages past the gas-inlet leading thereto, all substantially as shown and described.
Signed by me at Wheeling, West Vlrginia, this 2d day of April, 1902.
SHELDON JOSEPH.
