SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Patent No. 747,723, dated December 422, 1903.
Appiiantutieaangust11,1903. staart. 169,076. V(Inman.)y
To all wir/m, it may concern,.-
Beit known that we, DAVID D.. J oNEs,aciti zen of theUnited States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, and ARTHUR FRANCIS, a subject of the King of'England,residir1'g at Swansea, England, haveinvented certain newand useful Improvements in Label-Moisteners,of which the following is a specification, refer- Io ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and usefulimprovementsinlabel-moisteners;and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device in which labels that are adapted to be affixed to packages may be easily moistened or have adhesive substanceapplied to the face of the label in an even and perfect manner. y Y
Briefly described, the/invention comprises a boxer frame in which is provided a bed or vtable to receive the label. Aliquid-receptacle is provided in the box or frame 'beneath the bed or table, and journaled in the liquidreceptacle is a roller which revolves in the liquid con'tainedin the receptacle and is of a diameter sufficient to project above the bed or table, whereby when the labels are' drawnacross said roller the liquid will be 5o applied to said label. Meansis provided for strippinglabels from the roller andprevent their being carried downward thereby into the liquid-receptacle,` and a liquid-reservoir Ais provided whereby a constant head of liq- '35 uid may be maintained vvin the liquid-recepshowing the' removable liquid-receptacle partially removed from the' bo-x or frame.
To put our'invention into practice,we construct a box or frame comprising a bottom 1 and the sides 2, together with the rearwall or end 3, andthe intermediate'wall or partition .4. Placed in the space between the rear wall or end 3 andthe lintermediate wall or partition 4 is a liquid-reservoir 5, provided with a suitable cover or lid 6. We provide a false bottom 7, which is secured to the sides 2, and on this falsebottom place a metal plate 8, forming a bed or table upon which the labels to be moistened are placed. The front or forward end-,9 of the boxor frame is detachable, and-for this purpose is provided with a suitable handle 1Q. ySecured .to the inner face of thisfront or end 9 is a vided with a suitable handle 17. Attached to the edges of the base l1, near the forward end thereof, are standards 18, notched at their upper ends to form seats for the ends of the shaft 19, which carries the liquid-applying roller 20. This liquid-applying roller 20 is provided with a` plurality of peripheral grooves 21, and secured to the upper edge of the end or front 9 is a stripper-plate22, having tongues or fingers 23, which project into thegrooves 21 and prevent the labels being carried down by the roller into the liquid-receptacle l2. The roller 2O is of a diameter to project above the bed or table 8 and stripper-plate 22. When made of metal, brass has been found to' be most desirable, and when made of wood we prefer to make this roller of lignum-vitae or other hard wood, as thebest results have been obtained therefrom.
To the ends of the end piece 9 are attached hooks or catches 24 to be engaged with headed pins or screws 25, carried by the sides2, the
said sides being preferably formed at their lower ends with extension 26, underneath which the end wall 9 is received.
In practice the labels to be moistened or to have the adhesive Substance applied thereto are placed on the bed or fable 8 and drawn across the roller 20, the latter revolving and applying the liquid to the label. While so applying the liquid to the labels, the valve 16 may be opened, so as to constantly supply liquid to the receptacle 12 and maintain the desired head or liquid therein. Upon disen gaging the hooks 24 from the headed pins or studs 25 the liquid-receptacle and roller may be withdrawn from the box or frame for cleaning or for other purposes.
It Will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, a box or frame having a bed or table, a liquid-reservoir, a liquid-receptacle removably mounted in the box or frame underneath the bed or table, connections between the liquidreceptacle and the liquidreservoir, a roller mounted to rotate in the liquid-receptacle and project above the bed or table, and a stripper-plate in front of said roller, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
