Description
CHRISTOPHER A. G-ARVEY, 0F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
MARKING-POT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 2s, 1911.
Patented Jan. 9, 1912.
Serial No. 646,482.
To all whom it may concern.'
vnY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. ouis, Missouri, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Marking-Pots, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a pot for holding and supplying marking fluid to stencil brushes and marking brushes, and has for its object the production of a pot of this description provided with independent compartments, one of which holds marking fluid to be utilized in supplying a stencil brush and the other of which holds marking fluid to supply a marking brush.
It is common practice at the present time, in shipping rooms, to utilize stencils in marking packages where there is any considerable number of such packages to be marked at a single time, and to utilize a marking brush without a stencil in marking a small number of packages, this practice being followed for thereason that there is a great saving of time in the use of a stencil if the number of packages to be marked is sufficient to justify the preparation of a stencil; whereas, if the number is insufficient to justify such preparation, the old custom of using a marking brush only is resorted to. These facts being true, it is imperative, in order that the full value of the time of the person marking the packages may be conserved, that a marking pot be provided in which both a stencil brush and a marking brush may be utilized, thereby avoiding the necessity for two marking pots, either of which may be at a distance from the user at the time it is desired in any particular instance. With these objects in view, I have devised a marking pot that supplies the needs of the user both in so far as the use of a stencil brush and a marking brush are concerned, and in which provision is made for the supply of marking fluid from the marking brush compartment to the stencil brush compartment.
Figure I is a perspective view of my marking pot; Fig. II is an enlarged vertical section.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the vessel of my marking pot proi vided with a handle 2 by which the vessel may be carried.
The interior of the device is sub-divided by a partition 3 into compartments A and B, the former of which is a stencil brush compartment and the latter of which is a marking brush compartment. The marking brush compartment B is intended to contain a supply of marking fluid into which a marking brush may be dipped, and said partition, which vis preferably inclined backwardly at its upper end from the wall of the vessel 1, is provided near its upper end with perforations 4 that permit of the delivery of marking fluid from the compartment B to the compartment A when the vessel 1 is tilted to move the marking fluid through such perforations. 'Ihe compartment B is closed at its upper end by a lid 5 containing a perforation 6 through which the` marking brush may be introduced into said compartment.
While it is desirable and, in practice, necessary, that a marking brush be dipped directly into the marking fluid to receive its supply of marking material, it is not desirable that a stencil brush be dipped into such fluid, but rather that there shall be such provision as will permit of the stencil brush tip having marking fluid applied to it at its end only in order that there will not be a surplusage of marking fluid applied to a stencil on which the stencil brush is used to result in destroying or smearing the characters produced in the use of the stencil and stencil brush. With this in mind, I place in the stencil brush compartment a mass 7 of absorbent material, such as waste, that may be saturated with marking fluid, and placed above this mass of absorbent material a marking fluid delivery plate 8 to which the stencil brush may be applied to receive its supply of marking fluid. The delivery plate 8 rests upon the absorbent material, is provided with perforations 9, and is corrugated or convoluted, thereby providing depressions and ridges in the former of which the perforations 9 are located.
A marking fluid delivery plate 8 rests loosely upon the absorbent material 7 and when a stencil brush is applied thereto and pressure exerted against the plate by the brush, the plate is depressed with the result of causing the marking fluid to rise through the perforations in the plate and adhere to the end of the brush tip and supply it with only such quantity of marking fluid as it is desired it should be supplied with, or only slightly in excess of such quantity. The user of the brush, after manipulating it as stated to cause it to be supplied with marking fluid, may readily remove any excess of marking uid therefrom by one or more passages of the brush tip across the plate 8,
l Imaterial'beneath the plate.
Whenever the supply of marking fluid in the absorbent material in the stencil brush compartment becomes depleted, such supply may be renewed by the simple act of tilting the marking pot to cause a limited flow of marking fluid from the marking brush compartment B into the stencil brush compartment, and it will therefore be seen that the marking brush compartment serves as a I reservoir to supply the needs of both compartments of my marking pot.
I claim:
In a marking pot, a vessel, a partition subdviding said vessel into a marking brush compartment and a stencil brush compa-rtment, said partition having apertures ad- Ajacent its upper end for the passage of ink Copies of this patent may be obtained for iive cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
