PATENT OFFICE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,624, dated December 22, 1903.
A lication fil d August 17, 1903. Serial No. 169.704. (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that we, CALVIN MILLER and MORRIS J ACOBS, citizens-of the United States of America, and residents of. Wheeling, county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and more particularly to monkey-wrenches; and it consists in the particular construction, arrange ment, and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully described.
The object of the invention is totprovide a quick acting monkey wrench--- that is, a
. fied form thereof, and Fig. 4. is a longitudinal section of said modified form.
Referring to said drawings, in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a handle portion having a fixed jaw 2 on its front end. Extending from one end to the other of the said handle portion 1 and through the head of the jaw 2in an opening or passage 3 is a longitudinal channel 4..
5 is a second jaw having an integral longitudinal shank or stem 6, adapted for sliding freely within the passage 3 and channel 4.. The upper edge or face of said stem 6 is provided with teeth 7, as shown.
Pivoted in a channeled or cut-out portion 8 of the jaw 2 is a lever 9, provided on its under side for its entire length with teeth 10,
. adapted for fitting upon or engaging the teeth 7 of the stem 6. Said lever 9 lies in said channel 4 with its upper edge or face slighly above the edges of the channel so that pressure may be applied thereto with the hand to make the teeth 10 thereof firmly engage the teeth 7 of the stem 6 to prevent movement therein.
When it is desired to adjust the jaws to fit about a nut, the lever 9 is raised from ongagement with the stem 6 in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so as to permit the said stem to slide freely. Then said stem is slipped along said channel to bring the jaw 5 to the desired position, when the said lever 9 is lowered, so that its teeth will engage thoseof said stem. As is apparent, the jaws may be easily held in any position with relation to each other when once adjust ed, since the length of the lever is such that a slight pressure thereon with the hand is effective forsecurely holding the teeth thereof in engagement with the teeth of the stem.
The modification of our invention which is illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 renders the device effective not only for a monkey-wrench, but also for a pipe-wrench. The construction is practically the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, except that the stem 6 is toothed on its under side and that the lever 9 is pivoted in the rear end of the handle 1. The jaws 2 and 5 are provided with teeth 11, adapted for engaging and holding a pipe therebetween. The teeth 7 of the stem 6 are directed forward, so that possibility of slipping is prevented when the teeth 10' of the lever 9 are in engagement therewith.
As is apparent, the operation of adjusting the jaws of the invention with relation to each other requires but a moments time, thus rendering the device quite an improvement over theordinary wrench.
It is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the construction of our invention without materially departing from the spirit or scope thereof. Hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the precise construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wrench, a handle portion provided with a longitudinal channel which extends from one end to the other thereof, a jaw fixed on the front end of said handle,a passage through said jaw, a lever pivoted in said ICD channel at the rear end of the handle and lying longitudinally in the upper part of said channel, a second jaw, an integral stem carried by said second jaw, said stem slidably mounted in the passage in the first-mentioned jaw and in the channel of the handle portion, and teeth carried by the under side of the said lever along its entire length and by the upper edge of saidstem along its entire length, said teeth adapted for engagement topreven t movement in said stem, substantially as described.
2. In a wrench, a handle having a longitudinal channel therein extending from oneend to the other thereof, a fixed jaw on said handle, said jawprovided witha passage therethrough, a lever pivoted in said channel at the rear end of said handle, a second jaw, a fixed stem carried by said second jaw, said stem mounted within the passage in the jaw and in the channel of said handle, oppositelydirected teeth carried by the entire lengths of the engaging faces of said lever and stem, substantially as described.
