IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-SHARPENERS.
@Ligt tigitnle refemh tu in time letters atent mit mailing nrt uf tige tame.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, OSCAR C. SQUYER, of Penn Yan, in the county of Yates, and State of New York, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Pencil-Sharpeners; and I do-herebyY declare that the following is aV full, clear, und exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed` drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents thesharpener in a, vertical position Figure 2 represents lthe Sharpener applied to a pencil.
Figure?) is a vertical section on an enlarged scale.
The letters of reference referto the same parts in each figure.
The nature of my invention consists in making a pencil-Sharpener that may be applied to a pencil, and kopt there until thepencil is worn out; or itvmny be removed from the pencil, if required, and used to sharpen any number of pencils, and, when kept upon a pencil, it will strengthen the lead and prevent it being broken, and, by being drawn on the pencil, by a screw at the upper end, it will require but little turning to sharpen as much as is required. l
To enable others skilled in the nrt tovinake and use my invention, I will describe its mode of construction and operation. f
A is the pencil-sharpener, made of steel, and of any size to suit the various-sized pencils, and may be runde to point the pencils coarse or fine, with the angles of the point more or less acute, as preferred. It is open at one side, as shown by the figure, which will allow it to accommodate itself to the various-sized pencils, and the sharpener at onesde of this opening has a cutting-edge. B is the cutting-edge. It may be made curved or straight, and should be set inward alittle to make it cut freely. C is afemale screw, made by making the `upper end spiral, and then turning it inward sufficient to form the necessary thread to draw the Sharpener on the pencil; and this maybe made coarse or fine, and u screw may be formed in any other manner preferred. The use of this thread is to draw the Sharpener on the pencil, and prevent it being lost while the pencil is'not in use. D is a pencil with the Sharpener applied, and it'is represented in iig. 2.
Having thus fully described rny invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The screw C, in combination with the pencil-Sharpener, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
OSCAR o. SQUYER.
