SEPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 747,170, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed August 12, 1903. $erial1lo. 169,251; (No model.)
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. HARMON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Scio, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Tongs, of which the following is a specification, reference be inghad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pipe'tongs; and the primary object of the invention is to construct tongs for use in connection with gripping of pipe in a manner whereby a firmer and more secure grip may be obtained on the pipe whereby to hold the same for any desired purpose.
My improved tongs relate to that type in which a flexible strap is employed for encircling the pipe to be gripped; and my improvement primarily consists in attaching this flexible strap, whether it be of a chain or other form, direct to the end of the lever-handle and providing a movable jaw with a grippingsurface to engage the pipe and also with means for securing the flexible strap or chain thereto.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and
wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pipe-tongs in position on a pipe, showing in dotted lines the mannerin which the flexible strap is drawn into engagement with the pipe, the lever-handle being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the tongs in position on a pipe, the handle being partly broken away. Fig. 3 is an end view of the movable jaw. Fig. 4 is a central vertical sectional view of the same.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a suitable lever-handle l of a suitable length and size, to the inner end 2 of which I pivotally secure the flexible strap or chain 3. This strap or chain, it will be apparent, may be of any desired or approved form, though in practice I have generally employed the form of double side links chain, the pivots t of the links being extended beyond the sides of' the links, whereby to form afastening means to engage in the notches 5, provided therefor in the side walls of the grooves 6 made in the upper face of the movable jaw 7. This movable jaw is bifurcated at its lower end, and the two check-pieces 8 thus formed are pivotally secured to the leverhandle 1. This jaw is provided with a toothed jaw-face 9, adapted to grip with the pipe 10', as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the cut-away portion 10 of the jaw is of sufiicient depth to allow the movement of the end 2 of the lever-handle therein, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The top of the jaw? is so grooved that the pivot-pins of the links which lie beyond the notches 5 will be received between the side walls 6',
enough of the notches 5 being provided in the ribs 7 on the inner face of the walls 6 to securely hold the strap or chain in engagement with the jaw.
The wrench is placed on the pipe, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and it will be observed that as the leverhandle is forced downwardly the end of the same swings within the movable jaw and the strap or chain is drawn into firm binding engagement with the pipe, this connection also drawing the jaw 7 into a gripping engagement with the pipe to securely hold the same. The swinging of the lever-handle within the jaw enables me to obtain a firm and sure grip on the pipe not obtainable ordinarily in wrenches of this type. Tlhereleasing of the pressure on the lever-handle releases the grip and permits the ready removal of the flexible strap or chain.
It will be'noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from, the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pipe-tongs of the type set forth comprising a lever, a jaw pivoted to said lever to the rear of the front end thereof and having a cut-away portion within which said outer end of the lever may operate, said jaw having a head. at the upper end thereof extending beyond the outer end of the lever, and having its face serrated, the outer face of the head thereof upward into engagement with the being grooved and having notches formed in pipe. 10 the side walls formed. by said groove, and a In testimony whereof I affix my signature link-chain secured to the forward end of the in the presence of two witnesses.
5 lever and having the pivot-pins thereoffe- ALBERT I-I. HARMON ceived in the said notches of the side walls of Witnesses: a said groove, said lever being operated down- GRACE HARMON,
wardly to bring the link pivoted to the end I ELLA v. HEARD.
