JULIUS YUHIXSZ, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WASHBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,030, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed March 26, 1903. Serial No. 149,612. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JULIUS YUHAsZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the countyof Kings and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a washboard having improved neansfor holding a bar of soap in position for use; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a washboard constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a front or face view of a washboard made according to myinvention; Fig. 2, a back view thereof with the legs broken off; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention I provide a washboard a of the usual form, which is provided with the usual corrugated face surface 5, consisting in the form of construction shown of corrugated sheet metal supported by longitudinal back rods 11 three of which are shown. At the head of the board is a transverse space or chamber 0, across which is placed parallel with the corrugated face surface I) an open wire or network d. Placed in the space or chamber 0 is a followere, and pivoted to the side walls of the back of the board atfare springs g, four of which are shown and the free ends of which bearon the follower e. The springs g may be turned outwardly on their pivotal connections atfand the follower e may be removed, and in practice a cake or bar of soap h is placed in the space or chamber 0 on the wire or net work (1. The
follower e is then placed in position and the springs g are turned so as to bear on said follower, as shown in the drawings, so as to force the follower against the cake or bar of soap, which is in turn forced against the open wire or net work cl, and all that is necessary in soaping a garment or other article which it is desired to wash is to soak said garment in water and then rub it over the open wire or net work d, and the said garment or article will come in contact with the cake or bar of soap through the openings in said Wire or net work, and when the surface of the soap has become moistened the wire or net work will cut thereinto and the surface of the soap will be even with the outer surface of the wire or net work, and this will facilitate the soaping of the garment or article, as will be readily understood.
My invention is not in any way limited to the general construction of the board, and various changes therein and modifications thereof maybe made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A washboard the head portion of which is provided with an open space arranged transversely thereof and over which is placed an open wire or net work, a follower placed in said space, and springs pivotally connected with the back of the board and adapted to bear on said follower, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 25th day of March, 1903.
JULIUS YUI-IAsZ.
