PATENT OFFICE.
GATE.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,846, dated December 1 5, 1903. Application filed August 1, 1903. aerial N0i167,913. 1 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- I
Be it known that we,LoUIs KIEVIT and Con- NELIUS BLAAUBOEB, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of the city and county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to gates; and the object'of our invention is to provide a gate so constructed and operated that it may be easy and rapid of manipulation, thus preventing much delay and inconvenience, suchas is ex perienced on crowded platforms of elevated cars and other places where a gate is necessary. We accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gate and operating mechanism on a car-platform. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the gate closed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the gate open. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of an end elevation of the gate. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of a top viewof plates, hearings, and posts. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of partially-inclosed track and rollers. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of catch.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The gate is constructed by crossing at right angles any number of bars or rails A, according to the size and the character of the gate desired. These bars may be placed apart any suitable distance, according to the use to which the gate is to be put. These bars are pivoted together by means of rivets or any other suitable device. Washers are placed on the rivets or bolts between the bars where they cross one another, thus preventing them from coming in contact with one another, thereby eliminating friction while gate is in operation.
The front vertical bar B is longer than the other vertical bars, extending below the bottom horizontal bar of the gate any desired distance. At the lower. end of this bar are fastened one or more wheels or rollers C,which run loosely along the partially-inclosed track D when the gate is being opened and closed.
An upright post or shaft E is mounted rigidly on the platform where the gate is to be placed and adjacent to the gate. The
height of this post or shaft is regulated according to the size of the gate and the distance the plates F will slide up on said .post when the gate is opened. The gate is connected to this upright post by means of said plates F,
which are adapted to slide up and down said post. Bearings. made to conform with the surface of the post or shaft E may be placed in these plates F, adapted to facilitate the reciprocating action of the plates on said post E. These bearings may consist of grooved wheels placed on opposite sides ofthe shaft E in each of plates F. These wheels are held in position on opposite sides of the shaft E by having said shaft E so constructed that on each of the opposite sides of said shaft E'there is a ridge extending along the length of the.
shaft, against which the flanges of the grooved wheels will bear. If desired, these rollerbearings may be omitted, and the inside of the plates F may be made to conform to the surface of the post or shaft.
Plates F are fastened on the one side of shaft E to inner vertical bar of gate and on the opposite side of shaft E to a vertical bar K, either similar to or narrower than the vertical bars of the gate, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A plate L may be fastened to the vertical bar of gate adjacent to post E and to a vertical bar K for the purpose of strengthening the gate in case the distance between the two bearing-plates is too great.
- When gate is-being opened, the vertical bar nearest to the post E and fastened thereto by means of the plates F moves upward, causing the other vertical bars, except front vertical bar B, to move backward and upward and close in on each other. Vertical bar B, resting on its rollers O, which are inclosed in a track D, with an elongated slot through which the lower end of the bar B moves backward and forward, only moves backward and forward as the gate is being opened and closed, being prevented from moving upward by its rollers C, which are retained in the inclosed track D. When gate is opened to its fullest extent, all the vertical bars have moved against each other, thus leaving no space between them. When the gate is being closed, the vertical bar nearest to the upright post or shaft E moves downward, causing the other vertical bars, except vertical bar B, to move downward and forward. Vertical bar B, sliding on its rollers O in track D, only moves forward until it slides into the catch I, when the gate is entirely closed.
The operating mechanism, as shown in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings, may be composed of a simple combination of cog-wheels, rack, and lever. A rack G is connected to the gate by fastening it to the bearing-plates thereof. The cog-wheels H, operating gate by means of this rack, are of such a size and so arranged that by pushing or pulling the lever L the gate will open or close. The distance the lever will have to move to operate the gate is regulated by the use of differings in said plates.
We do not limit ourselves to any form of operating mechanism in connection with the gate.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Agate consisting ofaseriesofbars, placed transversely to each other and pivoted together where they cross one another, the forward vertical barof the gate extendingbelow the other vertical bars; with a roller placed at the end thereof; a partially-inclosed track engaging said roller; a stationary upright post or shaft; plates fastened rigidly to the inner vertical bar of the gate adjacent to said upright post, said plates embracing and reciprocating on said post; roller-bearings located in said plates; a retaining-support for the forward end of the gate when closed; a rack in connection with said gate; a series of gears; one of said gears engaging said rack; a lever for operating said gears.
2. A gate consisting of a series of bars placed transversely to each other and pivoted together where they cross one another, the forward vertical bar of the gate extending below the other vertical bars, with a roller placed at the end thereof; a partially-inclosed track engaging said roller; a stationary upright post or shaft; plates fastened rigidly to the inner vertical bar of the gate adjacent to said upright post, said plates embracing and reciprocating on said post; roller-bearings located in said plates; a retaining-support for the forward end of the gate when closed.
3. A gate consisting of a series of bars placed transversely to each other and pivoted together where they cross one another; a roller placed at the end of the forward vertical bar;
- a track for said roller; a stationary upright post or shaft; plates fastened rigidly to the inner vertical bar of the gate adjacent to said upright post; said plates embracing and reciprocating on said upright post, substantially as described.
4:. A gate constructed by pivotinganumber of bars transversely to one another; a post; plates fastened rigidly to the inner vertical bar of said gate adjacent to said post; said plates embracing and reciprocating on said post; a track; a roller located at the lower end of the forward vertical bar movable on said track; and a means for elevating the inner vertical bar of said gate and drawing said gate directly toward said upright post, substantially as described.
5. A gate constructed by pivotinga number of bars transversely to one another; an up right post; plates fastened rigidly to the inner vertical bar of said gate, adjacent to said post, said plates embracing and reciprocating on said post; a partially-inclosed track; a roller located at the lower end of the forward vertical bar of said gate movable in said track; and a means for drawing said gate directly toward said upright post and elevating the inner part of said gate, substantially as described.
