vator and which will operate automatically when the lifting cable breaks thus stopping the car and preventing it from falling down the elevator shaft.
This brake is so constructed that when the car is in working order, the gripping bars will be held out of engagement with the rack and is further so constructed that when the cable breaks, springs forming part of the improved structure will move a wedging block downwardly thus moving the gripping bars outwardly to engage the teeth of the rack bars.
This device is further so constructed that the movement of the wedging blocks in one direction will be limited thus preventing the wedging block from being drawn out of place when the car is in use and is further so constructed that movement of the gripping bars will be guided and the bars thus caused to be moved to the proper position for engaging the teeth of the rack bars.
This improved device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in elevation showing the brake in the inoperative position. Fig. 2 is a View in elevation showing the brake in the operative position. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the brake. Fig. 4 is a trans verse sectional view taken along the line L4: of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan viev. of the brake. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken along the line 66 of Fig. 5, the wedging block being shown in elevation.
The elevator car with which this brake is to be connected is provided with armslU which extend above the car and carry side plates 11 extending upon opposite sides of the tracks 12. These tracks 12 are provided with teeth as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 thus providing rack bars 13 which will be engaged by the brake mechanism and prevent the car from falling down the elevator shaft when the cable 14 breaks.

and a bottom 16 positionedbetween the side walls 15 and braced by brackets 17. The flooring 16 isprovided with a tapered passageway 18 through which the wedge 19 passes, the wedge being providedwith side ribs 20 fitting into grooves 21 formed in the side walls 15. Therefore the wedge will be prevented from moving'longitudinally between the side walls. Side plates 22 are secured to the side walls 15 by means of screws or other fasteners and are provided with slots 23 which receive tongues 24 extending from the plate 25 secured to the end of the wedge 19. This plate 25 limits the upward movement of the wedge and prevents the wedge from being drawn entirely out of the passageway 18 when the car is in operation.
Springs 26 are secured to the plate and when the car is in operation these springs are extended as shown in Fig. 1. When the cable breaks, the springs will move to the position shown in Fig. 2 and draw the wedging block downwardly. The gripping bars 27 which are to engage the rack bars 13 rest upon the bottom 01' flooring 16 and are guided in their sliding movement by the guiding blocks 28, which blocks are secured between the side walls 15 and are provided with openings 29 through which the gripping bars pass and with slots 30 through which rods 31 pass. These rods 31 are pivotally connected with the gripping bars and with the upper end portion of the wedging block as shown at 32 and 33 and it will thus be readily seen that when the wedging block moves, the gripping bars will be moved longitudinally into or out of engagement with the rack bars. Therefore when the cable breaks, the gripping bars will engage the rack teeth.
What is claimed is 1. A brake including carrying bars, a housing carried by said bars and including side walls and a bottom wall positioned between the side walls and provided with a tapering opening intermediate its length, guiding blocks positioned in said housing between said side walls, gripping bars resting upon the bottom of said housing and passing through said guiding blocks, a wedge slidably mounted in the opening of said flooring, links pivotally connected with said wedge and pivotally connected with said gripping bars, guide plates secured to provided with tongues fitting into said slots,
and springs secured to said plate and yieldably holding the wedge in a position to retain said gripping bars extended.
