PATENT OFFICE.
PEDAL ATTACHMENT FOR PIANOS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,101, dated December 1903' Application filed September 10, 1903. Serial No. 172,556. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN KIND, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, (Bronx,) county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pedal Attachments for Pianos, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pedal attachment by means of which children may readily manipulate the pedals of a piano without undue exertion.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, of my improved pedal attachment; and Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
The letter a represents a guide-plate supported by legs I) at a suitable distance above the floor. Above the plate a there is supported by legs I) a foot-plate c, and above plate 0 there is in turn supported by legs b a narrow top plate (I, the whole constituting a stool.
Between the plates 0 and d are mounted bearings e, to which are pivoted at f the auxiliary pedals f, that extend beyond the plate d and above plate 0. These auxiliary pedals are so connected to the main piano-pedals g of pianoA that the motion imparted to the former is transmitted to the latter; but in transmitting such motion it is desirable that the reach of the auxiliary pedals be less than that of the main pedals, so that the childs leg need not be unduly lowered. To effect this result, I operatively connect the pedalsf g by a rod H, which extends obliquely back from the front of pedalfto the rear of pedal g.
For guiding the rod H in its oblique position I fit into an opening of plate ct an oblique tnbular guide 2', having a flange t", which is set at an angle to the body of the guide. The flange i rests upon and is secured to plate a, so that the guide extends rearwardly from top to bottom. The rod H is composed of an upper section h, a lower section it, and an intermediate connecting screw-stem 7L2, by means of which the length of the rod may be adjusted. Between the flange t" and the upper section it of rod H the screw-stem k is surrounded by aspringj, which tends to normally raise the rod and the auxiliary pedal.
It will be seen that as the rod H engages the pedalfnear the forward end of the latter a short stroke will suffice to operate the pedal 9. Further, as the rod H engages the pedal 9 near its rear end the pedal remains accessible to the foot of an adult player.
What I claim is- In a pedal attachment for pianos, a stool, an auxiliary pedal, and an oblique flanged tubular guide, combined with a rod passing from the pedal through said guide and composed of an upper section, a lower section, and an intermediate connecting-screw, and with a spring between the guide-flange and the upper rod-section, substantially as specified.
Signed by me at New York city, (Bronx,) New York, this 8th day of September, 1908.
HERMAN KIND.
