JOHN FREDERICK DAAB, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
ATTACHMENT FOR WASHBOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,036, dated December 8, 1903.
Application filed October 1d, 1903. Serial No. 1'77,07( (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN FREDERIOKDAAB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Nashboilers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for washingboilers for preventing the clothes from rising while being boiled and by the use of which attachment water is prevented from boiling over upon the stove or floor.
The invention consists more specifically in the provision of an attachment comprising a rack made, preferably, of wire or any suitable material and of a suitable shape to fit within the boiler, and provided with bailshaped members which are adapted to be hung upon a rod suspended in suitable bearings upon the opposite edges of the boiler.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device shown as applied to a boiler. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the device removed from the boiler. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view through the boiler, showing the manner of holding the device Within the boiler; and Fig. 4 is a detail View of one set of the clamping members.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a boiler having a suitable rim A, and B designates a clamping member which has an angled lower end B, designed to engage underneath the rim A of the boiler, and B designates a recess formed in said clamping member. A second clamping-plate O has an angled end (3, which angled portion is of a length equal to the thickness of said rim, and when adjusted in place it is adapted to contact with the inner face of the clamp B. Each of said clamping members B and O has registering apertures which are adapted to receive a thumb-screw K for the purpose of holding the two members B and O in a clamping relation against the edge of the boiler, as shown clearly in the detail view of the drawings.
There are to be two clamping members of similar construction, as described, employed, one upon each side of the boiler, and the recesses formed upon-the outer of said clamping members is adapted to form bearings for a shaft D, which may be of any suitable shape, preferably square, and conforming to the shape of the recess in the clamping member. A wooden handle E is mounted upon said shaft, and F designates a rack made of any suitable material which will not corrode or rust and is of such a shape as to fit within the boiler. Bail -shaped members H have their ends fastened to the longitudinal edges of said rack and carry loops T, which are of such a shape as to fit the shaft D.
Mounted within the boiler are clamping members N, having recesses N therein, which are riveted or otherwise secu red to the boiler, and the upper ends of said members N are positioned below the rim of the boiler, provided for the purpose of receiving the shaft D when it is desired to allow the rack to be held in the boiler with the cover upon the latter.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of a device'embodying the features of my invention means is provided for frictionally holding clothes down in a boiler while being boiled, thereby preventing water from spilling over the edge of the boiler upon the stove or floor.
While I have shown a particular construction of device embodying my invention, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the detailed construction of the same, if desired, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a boiler having clamping members secured thereto, a rack,
bail-shaped members secured thereto, eyes formed in said members, a shaft passed through said eyes and supporting said rack, and the ends of said shaft being held in recesses formed in said clamping members of the boiler, and a handle upon said shaft, as set forth.
2. In combination with a boiler having clamping members mounted thereon, recesses in saidv members, thumb screws passing through said clamping members, a rack adapted to be positioned within the boiler, bailshaped members secured to the opposite sides of the rack and having flattened eyes, a shaft fitted in said eyes and held from rotation therein, a handle upon said shaft, and the ends of said shaft adapted to be held in said clamping members, as set forth.
3. In combination with a boiler having a rim, angled clamping members fitted one above and one below said rim and the angled portions disposed in opposite directions, with the edge of one flange against the face of the other clamping-plate, a thumb-screw passing through registering eyes in said clampingplates, the outer of said clamping-plates being recessed, a rack adapted to be positioned in the boiler, bail-shaped members secured to the opposite sides of the rack and having eyes, a shaft fitted in said eyes, andahandle upon said shaft, the ends of said shaft adapted to have bearings in the recesses in said clamping members, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN FREDERICK DAAB.
