IMPROVED PAINT AND veertien-BRUSH.
@te Sistemas numb in inertia tsttrt vtent tnt meting niet nftte'tmu'e.
Be it known thatI', JAMES 'McKITTRIGK, of Brooklyn, inthe county loi Kings, and 4State of New York,
have invented a new and useful :improvement Paint-and Varnish-Brushes; and that the following description,
taken in connection with i.the i accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and Vexact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature andV principles-of my said improvement, by whieh'iny invention mayl be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as claim, anddesire toshav-e secured to me by Letters Patent. This invention relates toa new and useful improvement in paint and varnish-brushes, whereby the combined advantagesofa flat and'rounl handle are obtained, and the disadvantages of a flat handle avoided. Varnish brushes are constructed with a fiat handle, inorder that the brush or bristle portion may have a attenedform, but paint-brushes, although that form is preferable, are provided with round handles, and have a round brush or bristle portion, as a ilat handle is very tiresome to the hand, and would not answer for paint-brushes.
My invention consists in having the portion of the handlewhich is grasped by the hand of ro'un'dptaperform, and the other portiornwhich is inserted in the brush or bristle portion, of fiat form, as hereinafter fully shown and described.` In the accompanying sheet of drawings-- Figui-e1 is an elevationr external vienif.. my invention.- 'Figure '2, a horizontal section of the same, taken .in the line :u m, g.,1.
Figure 3, adetached side view of myimproved handle. i Figure 4, vend view ofl the same. Figure 5,` a side `view of the ordinary'at varnish-brush handle. Figure` 6, an end view of the same.V Similar letters of reference indicate like pars. VMly improved handle is constructed of a. piece, A, of round taper-form, and has two wingsorprojections B B attached to it at opposite 'sides of its-larger endjas-,shown clearly in iig. 3. These wings are made slightly4 taper-ina vertical direction', and should-be of such a length as is necessary to give the brush or bristle portion a fiat f orm, the wings being wholly/within. said portion. The wings Bmay be secured to the ronnddapenpart A in any proper manner, either by-glue, beads, or otherwise.4 The wings or projections B B'scrve the samev purpose as the ordinary fiat handle shown injg-s. 5 .and G, causing the brush o'r bristle portion `C to have an I oval-form Ain its transverse section, asshown clearly in iig. 2.
The round, handle isA a necessity with paint-brushes, and consequently 'thebristle portion of th-e latter is,
vmaderonn'd but painters put a band or clasp around the bristles in order to liatten them and give au oval.,
forin to the brush, which is essential inrorder that the brush may be used or worked fromtwo opposite sides to insure a wide, lat terminus.v`
If the brush be used or worked indiscriminately from all sides, it'would soon wear toa vr/ound point, and
. operate very imperfect-ly, hence the necessity for 'the oval or flattened form of brush, which enables the painter to work the brusli from two opposite sides, and thereby prevent the same being worn to a point.' l
AThe iiat handle AX, shown in iigs. 5 and 6, althoughit gives the .brush or bristle portion a-iiattened form, will notnnsweri'or' paint-brushes, asvit is tiresome to the hand.A It answers very well for varnish-brushes, as varni'shing'i's comparatively light work. l Y l My invention possesses all the advantages ofthe ordinary flat handle with the round handle, while the disadvantage of the fiat handle is avoided. I Y i Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Putent- V The tapering handleA ofthe paint-brush, when made round 'at its lower end, and provided withtwo inclined pieces B B upon opposite sides, all constructed as described for the purpose speciiiedf i l JAS. McKI'lTRICK'.
