IMPROVED EDGE-PLANE.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. McAULuY, of Carthage, in the county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio,
have invented a m} and useful Improvement in Edge-Planes for shocmakers, of which the following is a i'ull and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of and manner of adjustment of the blade of the edge-plane for the purposeof limiting the depth of cut made on the soles of shoes or boots previous to the final process of burnishing. J
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved edge-plane.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, where the section is made transversely to thec-utting-edge of the instrument.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the edge-plane, taken throughthe blade, and its set-screiv parallel to the cutting-edge.
A is the handle of the edge-plane, having firmly secured to it, by means of rivets or otherwise, the shank of stock B, which is made of iron or other suitable material. The concave cutting-blade-C is secured to the stockB by the set-serene, passed through a slot, at, in the returned face I) of the blade 0. The set-screw a enters the side of the stock B. The blade 0 has its cuttingcdge bevelled .upon the outside, and the free end of the blade remote from the slotted face 6 enters the groove 0 in the guard at of the stock 13. An adjustable gauge, D, is slotted, e, and secured to the stock B by the set screw o. It is provided with a guard, 61, a con;
, tinuation of the guard at of the stock 13. The stock B, as well as the adjustable gauge D, is bevelled of? on the inside, to allow a free passage of the parings from the cutting-edge of the instrument.
. Operation.
My improved edge-plane is adapted for the use of all shoe and boot-makers. Itis used to cut down the rough edges of the soles of shoes and boots previous to the use of the burnishcr, which completes the finish. The guards (Z 61' enter the groove between the sole and upper, protecting the latter from the cutting-edge of the plane. When a. shallow cut is desired, the set-screw c is liberated, and the gauge pushed out towards the cutting-blade 0, thereby narrowing the space between the blade and the gauge. When a deep cut is required, the gauge D is withdrawn from the edge of the blade 0. The cuttingblade C may be readily removed from the stock 13 by taking out the set-screw a, andmay be sharpened on the outer or convex face, which is preferable, for the reason that the shaving removed from the sole of the boot or shoe will pass straight back, and not curl up and finally clog the instrument. As the blade wears down, an adjustment is readily made by means of the set-screw a. The blade is entered in the gfoove c on the inside faceof the guard (Z. This construction precludes the possibility of'obstruction to the free passage of the paring or shavings taken from. the edge of the sole of the shoe or boot by' contact with the corner of the cutting-bin e G, thus making the operation easier, and improving the finish of the article operated on.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. The concave eutting-blade C, the edge being bevelled or sharpencd'on the outside, and having the returned face b'slotted for the purpose of securing it in any desirable position to the steel; 13, substantially in the man ner herein shown. l I
2. The adjustable gauge I), provided with the slot 0 and guard (2, when secured to the stock 13 or its cquiv alcnt, for the purpose set forth.
3. The stock 13, having the guard (Z and groove 0, in combination with the adjustable gauge D, cutting-blade C, and set-screws e and a, when the same are constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein described and set forth. v
CHARLES D. McAULEY.
