TO WHMQMMITVMAY CON CERN: Y,
Be it known that LJonN BUSSEY,`-e Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Corkscrew; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making partef this specification.I `My invention relates to an instrument for uncorking of bottles with great e'ase and rapidity, by a succession of simple drawing and thrusting actions, without letting goor turning. of the instrument.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of the improved instrument in theact of piercing the cork;
Figure 2 is an axial section of the instrument in its contracted condition.
lA is the corkscrew proper, of customary form, except that its shank consists of a screw, B, whose twist is reverse tcathat of the said screw A, and occupies -a nut, C, in the lower end of a tubular-socket, D, which pro' jects reotangnlarly fromthe middle of the handle E, like the sh'ank of the common corkscrew. The shank B has, at its upper end, a neck, F, to receive a spring-catch, G, and a head, H, toprevent the screw pulling from v its socket 'when released from the catch 'Gr The'end of dthe handle next tothe spring-catchhas a metallic tip or rasp, I, firmly attached to it. This tip` is serrated, or otherwise broken on its end surface,'to adapt it for l removing the wax that may adhere to the neck ofthe bottlepalridk has, on itsinner side, a cup or pocket, z', to
lhold a. spiral spring, J, which, pressing against the. catch G, causes it to enter the neck F, andihold the screw to its retracted position. Kis a trigger or lever, pivoted tohthe catch, andso placed as te be easily thrust backward by the operatorfs thumb. p e
The operator, in using this instrument, grasps the handle'with his right hand, in theerdinary manner, and, with thethumb. of the same hand, pushes back the `trigger K, so as tc release theserew, and to allow it to drop toits full length. v The point ot' the screwfA` being then presentedV to.the headef the'cbrk, the operatorsimply thrusts the'instrument downward, causing the socket, bytrave-rsingd the screw-shank, to rotate thescrew, and `thereby to run the latter into-the cork until the completerctraetion of the screw causes'the shank thereof to be locked by the catch G. This having been effected, the corkis extracted by a' simple upward pull of`the instru-` ment in the usual way. The corkhaving been extracted, is removed almost instantaneously from the screwby again relcasingthe catch G- with thumb of the right hand, and drawing o' the cork by n. simple pull with the left hand; and this action also operates to draw out the screw ready for another cork. I i
I claim herein as new, and of my invention p Y The arrangement of the lever K, catch Gr, and spiral spring J, within the handle E, for the purpose of detaining and releasing the spiral shank B of the corkscrew A, and enabling the said catch to be actuatedby t the thumb of the hand by which the instrument is worked, substantially as described and represented.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
JOHN BUSSEY.
