SPECIFICATION forming part of LettereI Patent No. 287,504, dated october so, 1,583.
i Application filed April 14, 1883. (No model.)
- tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being. had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. e
This invention relates to improvements in cork screws or pullers, and has for its obj ect` a tool that will be more effective than the ordinary kind of corkscrews by taking a stronger vhold upon the cork, thus facilitating the operation of removing the cork from the bottle.
rIhe figure in the drawing is an elevation of my improvement.,
As shown in the drawing, my invention consists of a spoon-like or curved broadened portion, a, having a shank, b, said shank being provided with a suitable handle, c. The lower edge of the curved portion ais rounded, asindicated in the figure, and sharpened. The upper edge may be provided with teeth, as shown, or said edge may be lfiat or straight or concave, as desired.
In drawing a cork the cork screw or extractor is driven down through the cork or between the cork and the neck of the bottle,
and the teeth on the upper edge of the broad- 3 5 ened portion a pierce the under side of the cork, thus affording a strong hold on the same. By pulling upward the cork is readily withdrawn. i
The shank b may be made tapering or flat- .lo tened toward the lower end, if desirable, so as to facilitate the insertion of the extractor. One or `more broadened portions may be used either at right angles or in any othereffective relation. The cork-puller being inserted between the cork and the neck of the bottle allows the cork to be withdrawn without injury. The lower edge of the broadened portion (t may be straight, if desirable. .Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cork scre'w or extractor having a curved broadened portion, (asin) a shank, (as 1),) ,said shank being provided with a suitable handle, (as 0,) the said broadenedy portion a having its upper edge straight, concave, or provided .with teeth, and its lower edge either roundedor straight, all substantially as and for the purposes hereinset forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of March, 1883.
FREDRICK GAPPEL.
