APPLICATION FILED APR- 6,1914.

@uuemlioz CORK-EXTRACTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented dept. 112, 1916.
Application filed April 6, 1914. Serial No. 829,951.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo F. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kinmundy, in the county of Marion, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cork-Extractors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it 'appertains to make and use the'same. Y
This invention relates to an improvement in cork extractors and particularly to that class of cork extractors which are in the nature of tongs and are designed to grasp the cork during extraction.
The principal object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with, a spe-- cial form of jaw which'is designed to grasp the cork and prevent any slipping thereof.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
lln the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure l is a perspective View of the improved extractor. Fig. 2 is a side view of the extractor showing the same in use. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through one jaw. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the other jaw.
This extractor consists of two similar members each of which is provided with a handle portion 10 of the desired shape,
whether plain or ornamental, and a jaw,
portion indicated in general at 11; These portions 10 and 11 are connected, on each member, by a flat pivot portion 12 provided with a series of openings 13 arranged for the reception of a pivot bolt 14. The handle 1,0 and jaw 11 of each member are pref erably parallel but are off-set, the one from the other, as shown. One of the jaws 11 is of cymbiform shape and is provided inside with a series of serrations 15 which extend laterally across what may be termed the bowl of the jaw, these serrations having vertical sides facing toward the handle and slanting sides facing toward the point of the jaw. The, other jaw 11 is similarly shaped and is provided with longitudinal serrations 16.
In use the bolt 14 is inserted through an B it may be twisted, the longitudinal serrations 16 aiding in this, until it is loosened, then by a direct pull it may be withdrawn, the transverse serrations 15 holding it from slipping.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kinddescribed and of the character specified.
It will be obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departingfrom the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form hereinshown and described, but it is wished to include all such as come properly within the scope claimed. p
I am aware of the fact that theidea of providing the jaws of apair of cork pulling tweezers with roughened or toothed gripping surfaces is old, but so far as I am aware, there has never heretofore been provided a pair of cork pulling tweezers one tudinal movement of the cork, when the device is given a twisting pull to withdraw the cork.- k
Having thusdescribed the inventiomwhat is, claimed as new, is
A cork extractor comprising a {pair of pivotally connected members each including a jaw and a handle portion, said jaws having their opposed faces respectively provided with transverse and longitudinal ribs, said transverse ribs being so arranged as to pass freely into a bottle neck without mu} In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
