To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, SEVERIN HALVORSON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chi-- cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gripping Devices for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to gripping devices for printing-presses by which the paper is grippedto the rotary printing-press cylinder or to other similar element of the press. It has been found that in the operation of printing-presses the various gripping-fingers now in use which are employed to gripthe paper and hold it down upon the bed for the.
printing operation are defective and do not give entire satisfaction. This is because they rebound slightly from the cylinder after being swung or moved down upon the same to grip the paper, and the rebound permits the paper to shift a little upon the cylinder. The result is that the printing is not satisfactorily done. The impression is not in the right place,-which is especially objectionable in color-work where the same paper is run through the press several times.
go The object of the invention is to provide a gripping device which will overcome these objections and which when swung or moved down to grip the paper will notrebound, but
will maintain from the very beginning its 5 original hold upon the paper.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a portion of a printing-press having a plurality of gripping devices embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section 4o taken on line 2 2 in Fig. 1. .Fig. 3 is a side view of the gripping device, and Fig. 4. is an edge view of the same.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown a feed-table 1, which is understood to be suitably incorporated in a printing-press, and a rotary cylinder 2, which is understood to forma part of the press and to be suitably rotated to bring the paper against the form to cause the printing operation. The rotary cylinder 2 is provided with a plurality of gripping devices A A A, embodying my present invention. These are shown mounted upon a long rod 3', which is understood to be suitably carried by the rotary cylinder 2 and operated in any well-known or desirable manner to cause it ldesirably made integral with the portion 4:.
The finger 5 consists of an inner portion a, which extends from its connection with the ring 4 outwardly and then curves backwardly I for substantially its entire length alongside the outside of the ring 4, and an outer portion I), which extends forwardly, preferably in a curve, from the rear end of the portion a. The ring portion 4. is provided with a setscrew 6 to engage the rod 3, on which the gripping device is mounted. This construction provides a long bent gripping-finger, whose considerable length and bent shape causes it to be very'elastic and springy. The result is that the linger after striking the paper to grip it does not rebound therefrom, but maintains continuously its position and firm grip upon the paper.
