UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM E. NORRIS, OF MIDDLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAGE F OR PRlNTlNG-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,641, dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed February 16,1891. Serial No. 381,635. on model.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM E. NORRIS, of Middleborough, in. the county of Plymouth, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages for Printing-Presses, of which the following is adescription sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing a printing-press tympan with my improved gages in position for use; Fig. 2, an inside plan of a portion of the tympan-cover, showing the method of attaching the gage; Fig. 3, an edge elevation of the same; Fig. 4, an edge elevation of the gage detached, and Fig. 5 a top plan view.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates, especially, to a de-' tachable paper-gage for printing-presses; and it consistsin certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to producea simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation:
In the drawings,"A represents the tympan of an ordinary hand printing-press, on which the cloth or facing of card-board b is secured by metallic clamps d in the usual manner. It is a general custom to cement a slug or similar device to said facing to gage the position of the paper on the tympan. The position of such gage frequently has to be changed, tearing the facing b when removed and necessitating the substitution of a new facing. In my improvement this and other objections are overcome.
My improved gage 0 consists of two members h 2'. The member it has its upper face beveled, as best shown in Fig. 4, one of said members being reduced to a thin point at and the opposite end provided with a vertical lip or flange it, from which a stud m (see Fig. 5) projects longitudinally of said member. The member 2' is adapted to rest on the inclined upper face of the member j, one'end thereof being socketed to receive the stud m, and its opposite end being provided with a vertical flange, forming a head 10, against which the paper on the tympan rests when in use. Said member t'is slotted longitudinally, at q, and a set-screw r passes through said slot into the member h, whereby said membets are adj ustably secured together; or instead of said set-screw a screw-stud t may be secured to the member h and project through said slot, a nut 12 being turned onto said screw to bind the members together, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
In the use of my improvement the cutting-' pointj of the member his forced through the outer sheet of the facing b, as shown in Fig. 2, with the head 19 of said member toward the top of the tympan. By turning on the nut o the member 2' is clamped securely against said facing. The stud m on the member It serves to center the membert' and prevent accidental lateral movement thereof after the gages are placed. The slot q in-the member 1; permits longitudinal adjustment after attaching-the gage to the facing 12.
It is frequently desirable to employ a gage at the sides of the tympan. When thus used, the edge of thefacing is inserted between the members and clamped without penetrating said facing by the point j.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is The gage 0, comprising the member h, having the reduced portion j, flange k, and stud m, in combination with the member 2', slotted at q and provided with the head 19, and mechanism for adj ustably securing said members together, substantially as described.
\VILLIAM E. NORRIS.
