To all whom it may cortcern:
Be it known that I, ARIE DE Vos, of Des Moines, in the'county of Polk, in the State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grippers for Printing-Presses, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear,
and exact description.
This invention relates to the class ofgrippers which are employed on job printing presses for the purpose of withdrawing the printed paper from the type in process of receding from said paper. Said gripper usually consists of a bar or finger hinged to the press and arranged to fall automatically upon a portion of the paper after the same has received the impression of the type and while the latter recedes from the paper. In practice it is found that said grippers frequently fail to exert the requisite bearing on the paper, and to obviate such defect various devices have been resorted to, such as cords, wires, paper, and. other materials attached t the gripper.
The object of this invention is to provide more convenient and more efficient means for obviating the aforesaid defect; and to that end the invention consists in a novel construction of an auxiliary gripper attached to the ordinary gripping-finger, as hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claim.

der side of the finger C and some distance beyond the opposite edge thereof and is pro vided witha plurality of perforations c c.
Transversely through the vertical wall or back of the jaw a extends a screw-threaded eye, in which works a set-screwb. The other member of the auxiliary gripper consists of a jaw d, adapted to engage the edge of the finger O opposite the jaw ct and'provided with a slot 3, through which the tongue 15 passes. The bottom plate or flange of the r jaw (Z is formed with an upwardly-projecting ,1 lug or tooth e, which enters into one of the 6b perforations c.
In applying the described auxiliary gripper to the gripping-finger O the tongue 25 is slipped under said finger-and the jaw a pushed against the edge of the finger O. Then thej aw d is pushed as near as possible to the opposite edge of the aforesaid finger and the lug e entered into the nearest perforation c, and then by turning the set-screw b, so as to cause it to firmly bear 011 the adjacent edge of the finger O, the auxiliary gripper is firmly clamped on said finger.
It will be observed that the described aux.- ilia-ry gripper is easily applied to grippingfingers of different widths and is readily shifted lengthwise on the gripping finger to bring it into its requisite position for engaging the paper. it

What I claim is In'combination with the finger O, the jaw a, formedwith the tongue 6, provided with perforations c c, the set-screw 12, passing through the vertical wall of said jaw, and the jaw cl, provided with the slot 3 for the reception of the tongue 25 and with the lug e for engaging the perforations of saidtongue,substantially as described and shown.
