Description

J. S. MULLIN. STEAM GENERATOR.
No. 74,404. Patented Feb. 11; 1868.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. MULLIN, OF PORT MONMOUTH, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 74,40 1, dated February 11, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN S. MULLIN, of Port Monmouth, inthe county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Boiler; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to makeand use the same, reference being had to theaccompany} i-ng drawings, forming part of this specification.
, This invention relates to a new and im proved construction of steam-generators for either locomotive or stationary purposes, but which has more particular reference to boilers for locomotive-engines; and it consists in the arrangement of the fire-tines and construction of the fire-box and the smoke or combustioh chamber, and in the devices for arresting the sparks and returning them to the fire-box, whereby many advantages are secured,- as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the boiler through the line we of Fig. 2. Fig.2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1', through the line 3 y. Fig. 3 is a vertical section'of Fig. 2, through the line 2 z.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A is the shell of the boiler. B represents the fire fines or tubes of the boiler. G is the fire box. D is the smoke or combustion chamber.
4 By inclining the tube-sheet of the'fire-box and the smoke-chamber, as seen in the drawings, I are enabled to set the tubes in an inclined position, which, for the proper combastion of the fuel and the generation of steam, is conceded to be far better than the horizon tal position.
By this arrangement the tubes may be inclined and stand at right angles with the tube-sheets, which allows of the propel setting of the tubes, and secures a good and perfect joint. r 'The tube-sheets are marked c-a.
E is the smoke-stack or. chimney, which,
drops down to the bottom of the smoke-chamher, with a'suitable opening at the lower end for the admission of the smoke.
F is a double deflector attached to the smoke-stack, (within the-,chamber,) which divides the current of smoke and sparks which are discharged from the fines B. One side of this deflector F is seen in Fig.1, where the course of the sparks is indicated by the arrows, being guided, by the flange and scroll G, into the channel H. through which they are projected, by the difl'erence of pressure due to a partial vacuum produced in the fire-box by the current of air produced by exhausting the steam, into the smoke-stack.
But other provision is made for forcing the sparks from the smoke-chamber and returning them to the fire-box.
At the base of the stack E and smoke-chamher the channel H is connected with an airflue J, which extends, in front ofthe boiler or smoke-stack, to a funnel shape, as seen .at K. When the locomotive is in motion, the air entering the funnel will be compressed and forced, by the speed, into the channel H, thus forcing a, current from thechamber D, and carrying the sparks back to-the fire-box,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 3 7 V 1. The inclined fire-tubes B and inclined tube-sheets a a,'iu combination'with a steamboiler, substantially as shown and described.
2. The extension ofthe smoke-stack or chimhey of a steamboiler near the bottom of the smoke-chamber, substantially as shown and described.
, 3. The double deflector F, whereby the sparks are conducted into the channel H, substantially as described. p
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 20th day of November,
, JOHN S. MULLIN.
