To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HANs O. KEFERSTEIN, I of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boilers provided with water and fire tubes combined; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described. and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a water and fire tube constructed according to this invention and showing it connected with the headers. Fig. 2 is a similar view but shows certain modifications. Figs. 3 and 4 are cross sections taken on the lines r-a: and y respectively in Fig. 1.
A is a header at the front end portion of a steam boiler furnace, and 18 is a rear header plate or support at the other end of the said furnace. The fire-grate is arranged between the headers A and 18, below the water and fire tubes, and it and the smoke-stack, casing, and other essential parts, are not shown in the drawings, as they are all of any approved construction. The front header A is divided into two chambers 13 and 14 by a partition plate 12 which extends across its middle part and which is substantially parallel with its front and rear side plates 10 and 11.
B is the water and steam tube which is supported mainly by the rear plate 11 of the front header A and by the rear header 18.
O is the fire-tube which is supported mainly by the front plate 10 of the front header A and by the rear end portion of the water-tube B. The front end portion of the fire-tube O is provided with a nut 3, or any other approved form of collar or projection, which bears against the plate 10 and prevents the tube C from sliding rearwardly. A nut is preferred and it is screwed on the end portion of the tube so that a tight joint can be formed at this point.
A conical ring I) is formed on or otherwise rigidly secured to the front end portion of the water-tube B, and this ring engages tightly with a hole in the rear plate 11. A cap 5 is secured on the projecting end portions of the tubes B and C so as to close the rear end of the water-tube B. This cap is preferably provided with a conical portion (2 which engages with a similar conical portion or projection on the tube, so as to form a tight joint. A nut 4 is preferably secured on the rear end portion of the fire-tube O, and this nut secures the cap in position. The two nuts 3 and 4 afford the necessary end pressure, for keeping the conical portions 1) and d steam and water tight, and they can be screwed up and adjusted whenever necessary.
A partition 21 is arranged in the front and middle portions of the tube B to force the water to circulate along the tube C to the front end portion thereof and then back along its upper side to its front end. This partition extends across the annular space between the tubes B and C, and its middle part is preferably curved so as to rest on the tube O, but the partition may be supported in any other approved manner.
A connecting-piece 23 is formed on or secured to the front end portion of the tube B, and it connects the steam space of the said tube with the chamber 13. he connectingpiece is preferably formed on the upper side of the end portion of the tube B, and it and the fire-tube C are secured in a hole in the partition plate 12. They are fitted as tightly as convenient in this hole, but it is not necessary that an absolutely water-tight joint should be formed at this point. The water space in the lower part of the tube B is constantly in communication with the chamber 14. The chamber 14 is kept filled with water to a point above the level of the highest water-tube, and the tubes are arranged in rows one above the other in the usual way.
The fire on the grate heats the lower sides of the tubes B, and the products of combustion pass in the direction of the arrows g upwardly between the tubes B, thence over the rear header 18, and through the firetubes C to the smoke-stack. The water in the chamber 14 passes into the lower parts of the tubes B in the direction of the arrows h, and is converted into steam within the said tubes. The steam thus generated in the tubes B passes in the direction of the arrows i through the connecting-piece 23 into the steam chamber 13. The tubes may be secured in many other ways in carrying out this invention. In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2, the water-tube B has a conical projection 3 on its front end which serves to a great extent the same urpose as the nut 3. The cap 5 is provid fad with a collar 7c on its rear side instead of the nut 4, and the end portion of the fire-tube C is expanded into a conical hole 7c in the collar so as to secure the cap in position and form tight joints at each end of the tubes B and C. The connectingiece 23 is formed separate from the tube and is arranged upon its lower side instead of upon its upper side, and the position of the chambers 13 and 14 in the front header A is reversed, so that the water enters through the connecting-piece 23 from the water chamber 14 and passes into the lower part of the tube B; and the steam escapes from the upper part of the tube 13 and passes direct into the chamber What I claim is:
1. The combination, with a front header provided with a steam chamber and a water chamber arranged side by side, and a rear header; of a fire-tube having its end portions projecting through the said headers, a water and steam tube encircling the said fire-tube and having its upper part connected with the said steam chamber and having its lower part connected with the said water chamber at one end, and means for closing the other end of the said water and steam tube.
2. The combination, with a front header provided with a partition which forms a steam chamber and a water chamber, and a rear header; of a fire-tube having its end portions projecting through the said headers, a water and steam tube encircling the said firetube and having one end connected to one of the said chambers, a connecting-piece coupling the said end with the other said chamber and fitting in a hole in the said partition, and j means for closing the other end of the said.

3. The combination, with a front header provided with a steam chamber and a water chamber arranged side by side, and a rear header; of a fire-tube having its end portions projecting through the said headers, a water and steam tube encircling the said fire-tube and having its upper part connected with the i said steam chamber and having its lower 1 part connected with the said water chamber at one end, a longitudinal partition arranged in the annular space between the said tubes l at their front and middle portions, and means for closing the other end of the said water and steam tube.
4. The combination, with a front header provided with a steam chamber and a water chamber arranged side by side, and a rear header; of a fire-tube having its end portions projecting through the said headers, a water and steam tube encircling the said fire-tube and provided with a conical portion which engages with a hole in the inner side plate of the said front header, the front end of the said water and steam tube being operatively connected with the two said chambers, means for closing the rear end of the said water and steam tube and for securing it to the said fire-tube, and a projection at the front end of the said fire-tube which prevents the said tubes from moving rearwardly.
5. The combination, with a front header provided with asteam chamber and a water chamber arranged side by side, and a rear header; of a fire-tube having its end portions projecting through the said headers, a water and steam tube encircling the said fire-tube and operatively connected at its front end with the two said chambers, a cap secured to the said fire-tube and closing the rear end of the said water and steam tube, and a nut screwed on the front end portion of the said fire-tube and preventing the said tubes from moving rearwardly.
6. The combination, with a front header provided with a partition which forms a steam chamber and a water chamber, and a rear header; of a lire-tube having its end portions projecting through the said headers, a water and steam tube encircling the said firetube and having its lower part connected to the said water'chamber, a connecting-piece between the upper part of the said water and steam tube and the said steam chamber proj ecting through a hole in the said partition, and means for closing the rear end of the said water and steam tube.
