PATENT BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,786, dated February 5, 1895.
Application filed November 16,1893. Serial No. 91,147. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES CARROLL and JOHN MCNULTY, of Oswego,in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to vertical boilers.
Our object is to provide and construct an upright, or what is termed a vertical boiler, in which may be obtained all of the advantages of a horizontal and a vertical boiler singly, constructing it in such a way as to take advantage of the return flue system, thereby enabling us to utilize all the heat in the fuel consumed, and the further object of extending a portion of the boiler into the combustion chamber so as to utilize all of the heat therein contained; and to that end our invention consists in the several new and novel combinations of parts and features hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed.
It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1, is a side elevation of the boiler, complete. Fig. 2, is a vertical section thereof through the center. Fig. 3, is a section on line -u3-ro, Fig. 1. Fig. .4, is an end view of the vertical portion of the boiler, with the outer case, or cap, removed.
A- is avertical boiler having a fire-box --B located thereunder, as shown, and a smoke-stack or flue -G at one side as shown, and D is a Water leg or arm constructed substantially as shown opening into the main portion of the boiler A-, and, together with the central portion of the vertical boiler, forms a horizontal boiler provided with return flues, as hereinafter specified.
In the outer end of the water leg -=-D is a combustion chamber --E having the inner end -astopped as shown. The inner end constitutes the crown and flue sheets, all constructed from one piece of material as shown.
--b-- are the main or direct flues leading fromthe fire-box to the combustion chamber E, and -care the return flues leading from the combustion chamber to the smoke stack or fine --G--.
The object of constructing the inner end of the combustion chamber, that is, the crown and flue sheets stepped, as shown, is for the purpose of allowing us to make use of direct fines, shorter than the return fines, so as to allow the upper portion of the water arm, which is a portion of the boiler, to extend into the combustion chamber so as to obtain what ever heat may be contained therein.
It will also be observed that when the heat passes through the direct lines in its upward passage, it will be reflected against the crown sheet and thereby serve to heat the water in the upper part of the boiler. we are thus thereby enabled to save all of that heat which heretofore has not been utilized.
It will be seen that this construction produces an upright boiler, balanced upon the base of the vertical portion, and having a lateral arm secured upon one side thereof and supported wholly by said vertical portion; into which arm a cylinder is inserted and secured, fitting closely therein for a part of its length, then reduced in diameter, such reduced portion being concentric with the shell of said arm and having the flue-sheet whether stepped or not, secured in its inner end and supported thereby; the inward reduction of said cylinder creating a water chamber around such reduced part, whereby the heat imparted to said reduced portion is utilized in heating the water surrounding it.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a steam boiler, the fire box, and the short direct flues extending therefrom, combined with the return fines, and a crown sheet, formed in a single piece, flanged at its edges so as to be secured to the inner edges of the combustion chamber, and bent at its center so as to form the horizontal step F, midway between the ends of the direct and return does, so as to form an additional heating sur face for the heat issuing from the direct fines to strike against, and whereby the lower portion of the combustion chamber is enlarged, substantially as shown.
