To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Collar-Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for fastening the front portion of a shirt-neckband and for attaching a collar thereto. It often happens that one or both of the buttonholes at the front of a shirt-neckband become broken out or so enlarged that an ordinary collar-button cannot be used.
It is an object of my invention to provide a simple fastening device that may be readily attached to a neckband having a broken buttonhole, holding the ends of the band .together and also holding the ends of the collar.
I will describe a collar-fastening embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional view of a collar-fastoning embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 4. is a section on the line w a: of Fig. 2.
The fastening device consists of a strip of spring-yielding metal bent or folded to form a portion 1 for engaging against the inner side of a neckband and a portion 2 for engaging against the outer side of a neckband, these portions or members being of substantially equal lengths, so as to form a long clamping engagement with the. neckband. The plate is longitudinally curved to conform to the neck,and the lower edge of the part 1 is curved slightly outward, as indicated a113, thus conforming the device to the lower portion of a persons neck. On the front of the part 2 is a button 4, to which the ends of a collar are to be attached, as indicated in Fig. 1. The inner side of the portion 2 of the device is provided with pins or sharpened lugs 5 to engage in the material of the neckband, thus preventing accidental detachment of the fastening device from the band.
In the operation when the two portions of the neckba-nd of a shirt are brought together the fastening device is to be passed over the same, and the resiliency thereof will cause the pins 5 to engage in the material. Then of course the" collar may be secured in place in the usual manner.
While I have mentioned the plate as con-- sisting of metal, it is to be understood that it may be of any resilient material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device for securing together the two ends of a shirt-neckband, comprising a strip of resilient material folded lengthwise to form inner and outer members of substantially equal length and longitudinally curved, and a collar-engaging button on the outer member.
A collar-fastening, comprising a springyielding metal plate folded to provide a portion for engaging against the inner side of a shirt-band and a portion for engaging against the outer side thereof, means for holding the fastener in engagement with the material of the band, the said fastening device being longitudinally curved, and also curved outward at the lower edge of the inner member, and a collar-engaging button on the outer member.
A device for securing together the two ends of a shirt-neckband, consisting of a spring-yielding plate folded to form a portion for engaging against the outer surface of the neekband, and a portion for engaging against the inner portion of the band, the said inner portion having its edge curved outward and downward below the outer portion, and a button on the outer side of said outer portion.
4. A device for securing together the two ends of a shirt-neckband, consisting of a strip of spring-yielding metal folded to form a portion 1 for engaging against the inner side of the neckband, a portion 2 for engaging against the outer side of the nec kband, the said strip being longitudinally curved, the part 1 being curved outward at its lower part and a button on the part 2.
