PATENT OFFICE.
GEARING FOR GRINDING OR OTHER MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,256, dated November 3, 1903.
Application filed October 23,1902. Serial No. 128,420. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN C. DELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the cityand county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gearing for Grinding or other Mills,
. of which the following is a specification.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the.
casing of a grinding-mill, and B the drivingshaft thereof, said shaft being supported on the bearings O G, which, with the bearing 0 are all common to the base 0 and rigid therewith, as seen best in Fig. 1. By this means I provide an attachment which can be readily moved to the store or other place of use, and by removing the shaft of the grinding-mill there existing and applying the elongated shaft B herein shown the old mill need not be dispensed with or thrown away, but can be used in conjunction with the improved base and its bearings and the driving mechanism hereinafter described.
D designates a spur-whee] which is secured to the shaft B and meshes with the pinion E, to whose side or hub is secured the spur-wheel F, said pinion E and spur-wheel F being mounted on the counter-shaft G, which is supported on the bearings O and C parallel with the shaft B. The shaft G is free within the pinion E and spur-wheel F and the sleeve intermediate the same, one end being disposed within a socket on the inner side of the bearing 0 and at the other end in a boss 0 probase, so that when the fastening is removed the said shaft may be grasped and withdrawn, I
thus permitting of the ready removal of the pinion and spur-wheel and dismemberiug of the parts.
H designates a pinion which meshes with the wheel F and has its hub J mounted loosely on the extended portion K of the shaft B, said hub having secured to it the driving-pulley L.
The operation is as follows: The pulley L is adapted to receive rapid motion from a dynamo or other electric power or other rapid prime motor, if so desired. This rapidity would be injurious, if communicated to the shaft B, in many ways, such as excessive vibrations of the mill, strain on the parts, quick Wearing away of the same, improper grinding, &c.; but this is obviated by the motion of the pulley being transmitted to the pinion H, then to the large spur-wheel F, then again to pinion E and the larger spur-wheel D, and thus to the driving-shaft B,'which is thus run with sufficient power to properly cause the grinding action of the machine, but with reduced rapidity, the advantages of which are evident.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a grinding or other mill, a drivingshaft, a driving-pulley,an endwise-removable counter-shaft, gears on said driving-shaft and counter-shaft respectively, a second gear on the counter-shaft, and a gear movable with the driving-pulley and meshing with the second gear on the counter-shaft, said gearing being non-shiftable and said shafts being mounted in fixed bearings and one of the bearings for the counter-shaft being a socket closed at its outer end and the pulley adapted to be rapidly driven whereby said drivingshaft receives the power'of the pulley with reduced speed.
2. In a grinding or other mill, a base, bearings rising therefrom, one of said bear ins being formed with a socket upon its inner side and the other with a boss, a pinion and a spu r-wheel, an intermediate sleeve disposed 3 tions between the same and said pinion and mounted in said socket and the other in said spur-wheel. boss, said shaft projecting at one end beyond 3. In a grinding or other mill, a base, bearsaid boss, means for retaining said shaft in ings rising therefrom, one of said bearings I position, a driving'shaft and operative con- 5 being formed with a socket upon its inner nections between the same and said pinion :5
side and the other with a boss, a pinion and and spur-Wheel.
a spur-Wheel and an intermediate sleeve dis- JOHN C. DELL. posed between said Wheel and pinion, a shaft Witnesses: removably engaged Within and free of said JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM,
1o pinion, Wheel and sleeve, with one end WM. OANER WIEDERSHEIM.
