PAUL MAIWURM, OF SHREVE, OHIO.
DROP-HAMMER MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL .h/IAIWURM, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Shreve, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop-Hammer Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompai'iying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to drop hammers and has for its object the construction of n'iechanism for raising the hammer-weight and permitting it to fall upon the anvil automatically.
The features of my invention are hereinafter set forth and explained and are illus trated in the accompanying drawings as follows, viz
Figure 1, is a side view in elevation of a machine embodying my invention, with portions thereof broken away. Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same, with portions thereof broken away. Fig. 3, is a fragmentary View of each of the circular race-way wheels of my invention. Fig. 4, is a detail of my in: vention.
In these figures, A, indicates an anvil, of a drop-hammer; A, indicates the vertical hannner-guides thereon, and I3, indicates the han'uner-weight slidably mounted between said guides in the usual manner.
C, indicates a pulley adapted to receive around its periphery, a strap C, one end of which is secured to the han'nner-weight I and the opposite end thereof having a short shaft D, secured thereto, transversely, with the ends thereof extending beyond the edges of the strap C, and having mounted on the ends of said shaft D, rollers I). (See Fig. 4). For raising the weight B, I provide a pair of wheels E, secured upon the shafts E, which are mounted in bearings F, in fran'ies G, which frames Gr, are supported upon the base-plate G. On the outer ends of the shafts E, I secure spur-gears H,
and for driving said spur-gears H, I mount a drive-shaft J, in bearlngs J, on said Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 24, 1913.
Patented Dec. 2, 1913. Serial No. 775,539.
frames G, and on this drive-shaft J, I secure spurgears K, which intcrmesh with the spur-gears II, and I apply power to the shaft J, by means of a band-wheel L, or in any other more desirable manner. In the adjacent faces of the rims of the wheels E, I make annular grooves or race'ways 0, adapted to receive thereinto the rollers I), on the transverse shaft 1), secured in the end of the strap 0', and at points in each of said annular grooves 0, directly opposite each other, I place studs 0, which studs engage the rollers I), on the transverse shaft 1).
In operation, power is applied to the shaft J, and by means of the spur-gears ll, and K, the wheels E, are rotated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, causing the studs 0', in the race-ways c, to engage the rollers l), and thereby put strain upon the strap C, and as the wheels E, continue to revolve, carry the transverse shaft 1), around, as shown by broken lines in Fig. 1, thereby raising the hannner 13, to its highest point; and when the transverse shaft 1), has reached the lowest point of its traverse, the hammer I), is permitted to fall, and will rest upon the anvil A, until the rollers I), on the transverse shaft l), are again engaged by the studs 0.
,lIaving thus shown and described my invention so as to enable others to utilize the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
In a drop hammer mechanism the combination of an anvil, a haminer-weight, a pullcy, a strap over said pulley having one end secured to said hamnier-wcight, a pair of wheels E, secured concentric and in spaced relation to each other upon independent shafts E, and having annular grooves c, in the adjacent faces of their rims, spur-gear wheels II, secured on said shafts E, a shaft J, mounted adjacent to said spur-gears II, gear pinions K, thereon intermeshing with said spur-gear wheels, and stops 0, in said annular grooves, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
