UNITED STATES WILLIAM WEAVER, OF GREENWIOH, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MECHANICAL MOVEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,674, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WEAVER, of Greenwich, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented new and Improved Mechanical Movements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved move- Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken through the line w 00, Fig. 1.
Similarletters ofreference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved mechanical movement for driving scroll-sawing machines and other light machine ry by hand or other power, where great velocity is required; and it consists in the arrangement of the belts, two or more, with the pulleys and driving-shaft, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents two posts, to and between which the pulleys are pivoted. B isthe driving-pulley or drum, which is made wide so as to receive all the belts. The pulley or drum B is pivoted to the posts A, and to one of its journals is attached a crank or pulley, O, by which the power is applied. D are belts, which pass around the driving-pulley or drum B and around the loose pulleys E, each belt D having its own loose pulley E. The opposite sides of the belts D are drawn inward and pressed around the shaft F, from which the power is taken to the machinery to be driven, so that the said belts may pass around the opposite sides of said shaft alternately, as shown in Fig. 2, making the strain upon the shaft equal in opposite directions, thus relieving said shaft from any side strain from said belts. The loose pulleys E are placed upon a short shaft, G, the ends of which are attached to the ends of two levers, H, which are pivoted to two brackets attached to the posts A, or to other suitable supports. The rear ends of the levers H are rigidly connected by a cross-bar, to which is attached one end of a strap or coiled spring, or a sliding weight or other adjustable connection, I, for adjusting the tension of the belts D and taking up the stretch of said belts.
This device may be used for driving any machinery where a greater velocity may be required than can be obtained where the ordinary arran gements for transmitting power are employed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The arrangement of the belts D, two or more, with respect to the driving-pulley or drum B, loose pulleys E, equal in number to the belts D, and driving-shaft F, substantially'as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination or the levers H, provided with a spring sliding weight or other adjusting device, in combination with the loose pulleys E, belts D, drivingshaft F, and driving-pulley or drum B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 23d day of August, 1871.
' WILLIAM WEAVER.
