Be it known that I, HERBERT A. CHURCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Instruments for Massage and Similar Treatment, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description. i
This invention relates to the class of instruments which are designed to produce the effect of massage treatment of a persons body;
and the invention consists in a novel organi# zation of an instrument which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, andadjustable to regulate the degree of vibration imparted to the pnlsator, which is applied to the person under treatment.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of a 'massage instru-` ment embodying my invention; and Figs. 2, 8, and 4 are transverse sections, respectively, on lines X X, Y Y, and Z Z in Fig. l.

ct denotes the holder ofthe instrument, which holderI preferably form of a cylindrical chamber, from one end of which projects laterally a tubular guide b. To the ends of said holder are removably secured in anysuitable manner caps d and d', which close said ends to exclude dust from the interior of said holder.
e represents the pulsator proper, which is to be applied to the person under treatment. This pulsator is supported in the guide Z9 preferably by means of a piston e2, which is disposed in the guide and has connected to its outer end a stem e', attached to the pulsator. The guide b has screwed to its free end a cap b', through which the circumferentially reduced outer end of the piston e2 passes, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The cap b" serves to protect the interior of the guide from admission of dust. Theinner end of the piston has connectedto it by a balland-socket joint f' a diskf for the purpose herein presently explained.
In the opposite end of the holder a is arotary disk g, attached to the end of a shaft h, which passes through and is Vjournaled in a central aperture in the cap ol and through a sleeve d2, extending from said cap. Any suitable means, such as a flexible shaft h of a dental instrumen-t, may be employed to impart rotary motion to the sha-ft Zt, which transmits said motion to the disk g.
j represents a fulcrum which is sustained in the holder @between the disksfand g. On said fulcrum is supported a lever Z, to the ends of which are aftixed balls Z' Z2, engaging correspondingly-shaped sockets in the disks. The engagement ot' the lever with the disk Z2 is made eccentricin said disk to cause the lever Z to receive oscillatory motion from the rotation of the disk. Said motion of theleverimparts reciprocating motion to the disk f, which transmits a corresponding motion to the pulsator or vibratore. To allow the degree of pulsation or vibration to be regulated as may be desired by the person under treatment, I render the fulcrumj adjustablelongitudinally in the holder a, preferably by providing the said holder with a longitudinal slot s and forming the fulcru m of a cylindrical ring sustained longitudinally movable in the holder and connected to a screw t, which passes through the slot s and is provided on its outer end with a nut t', by means of which the fulcrum can be clampedin its desired position in the holder. It is obvious that by shifting the fulerum toward either end of the holder the degree of oscillation of the pulsator or vibrator e is varied as before stated. To obviate wearing and injury of the bearing of the lever on the fulcrum, I form said bearing of a ball o, seated in a correspondingly-shaped socket in the fulcrum and provided with a diametric channel, through which the lever Z passes. Inasmuch as the pulsator or vibrator is required to be very sensitive in its action, it will be readily appreciated that the adj ustability of the fulcrum of the lever Z is an import-ant feature of my invention.
The details of the construction of my invention are susceptible of modifications without conflicting with the efticiency oE/the instrument, and I therefore do not limit myself to the specific construction and combination of the component parts of my invention as illustrated in lthe accompanying drawings; neither do I restrict myself to the use of the said instrument for massage treatment, as it is adapted for various other purposes requir- IOO ing the adjustable and positive pulsatory motion.
The salient features of my said inventionV are summed up in the annexed claims.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination of a holder provided with a laterally-projecting guide, a pulsator provided with a stem supported in said guide, a fulcruln disposed in the holder, a lever seated intermediate its ends on said fulcrum and operatively engaged at one end With the stem of the pulsator, a rotary member engaging eccentrically the opposite end of said lever, and means for imparting rotary motion to said member as set forth.
2. The combination of a holder provided with a laterally-projecting guide, a pulsator provided with a stem supported in said guide, a fulcrum sustained longitudinally adjustable in the holder, a lever seated intermediate its ends on said fulcrum and operatively connected at one end to the pulsator-stem, and means for imparting oscillating motion to said lever.
3. The combination of a holder provided on one end with a laterally-projecting guide, a piston in said guide, a pulsator connected to the outer end of said piston, a disk connected to the inner end of the piston, a rotary disk in the opposite end of the holder, a fulcrum disposed in the holder, a lever seated intermediate its ends on said Fulcrum and connected at its ends eccentric to the aforesaid disks, and means for actuating the rotary disk as set forth.
4. The combination of a holder provided at one end with a laterally-projecting guide, a piston in said guide, a pulsator connected to the outer end of said piston, a disk connected to the inner end of the piston, a rotary disk in the opposite end of the holder, a fulcrum sustained longitudinally adjustable in the holder, a lever seated intermediate its ends on said fulcrum and connected at its ends eccentric to the aforesaid disks, and means for actuating the rotary disk as set forth.
5. The combination of a holder provided with a longitudinal slot and with a laterallyprojecting guide on one end, a piston in said guide, a pulsator connected to the outer end of said piston, a disk connected to the inner end of the piston, a rotary disk in the opposite end of the holder,`a fulcrum disposed in the holder, a screw passing through the longitudinal slot of the holder and connected to the fulcrum, a clamping-nut on the outer end of said screw, a lever seated on said :fulcrum and connected at its ends eccentric to the two disks, and a rotary shaft connected to the rotary disk as set forth.
6. The combination of a holder provided at one end with a laterally-projecting guide, a piston in said guide, a pulsator connected to the outer end of said piston, a disk connected to the inner end of the piston, a rotary disk in the opposite end of the holder, a fulcrnm sustained longitudinally in the holder, a lever connected by ball-and-socket joints to the fulcrum and to the two disks and eccentric to the said disks, and means for actuating the rotary disk as set forth.
'7. The combination with the holder and pulsator, of a fulcrum sustained longitudinally adjustable in said holder, a ball seated inv corresponding sockets in said fulcrum and provided with a diametric channel, a lever supported longitudinally movable in said channel and suitably connected to the pulsator, and means for oscillating said lever.
